Something I find encouraging is that the media is very much framing last night's events as a defection from the party line, rather than the party broadly caving.

I truly do not understand why the entire internet is completely obsessed with this specific mysterious shipwreck. Why not, say, the MV Derbyshire, or literally any other wreck in history?
I blame Gordon Lightfoot.

We have as much leverage as we’ve ever had — and Chuck Schumer is on the brink of taking a deal that gives Democrats NOTHING.
I’m glad Hakeem Jeffries will fight this in the House, but it should not get that far. Senate Dems must not cave.

Neither Zohran Mamdani nor Abigail Spanberger are the future of the Democratic Party.
We won’t win by imitating either campaign, but we’ll win by doing what they both did: running local-first campaigns, giving people a vision for the future, and rebuilding the American Dream for Gen Z.

My thesis here was and continues to be that MTG’s weird spree of normal-sounding stuff is her angling to oust Johnson and be speaker
I can't tell if this is currently 1) unthinkable or 2) conventional wisdom but I kinda think Johnson is going to lose the Speakership when the House comes back in session

Thesis: MTG is acting weirdly reasonable because she wants to be Speaker and thinks she can rally people to vote for her by starting to lead the charge against Johnson now

A pro-affordability, anti-Trump-corruption message unites the party. Every candidate can run on that, and every candidate can have their own take to fit that to their constituents. There's really no need to find fights to pick when the party agrees on more than it disagrees
Came here to say this, but Jamelle Bouie has this covered. 👇
When the Democratic tent includes candidates like Spanberger and Mamdani, there is no crisis, or fight, for the party. IT’S A COALITION, NOT A POINT ESTIMATE.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist

I think MTG is actually weirdly able to break with Johnson et. al. more so than most because she's so batshit insane that the voters who elected her will 100% believe it when she tells them that Mike Johnson or whoever is a corrupt deep state puppet or the like
MTG is an idiot, but she's also a weathervane and boy does the wind seem to be blowing a different direction recently
Marjorie Taylor Greene on the The View: "I hope that Mike Johnson is finally giving a single healthcare policy, because the country deserves it. And it shouldn't be a secret. I shouldn't have to go into a SCIF to find out Republican health insurance plan."

ok so got around to watching A House of Dynamite - obviously there's lots to nitpick, primarily the pressure on POTUS to launch before absorbing an attack headed for a nonmilitary target, but overall pretty good and I'm happy to let this dominate the conversation instead of Jacobsen Nuke Book.

I object to this usage of TACO because TACO is a principle - something can be an example of TACO or a TACO moment but TACO doesn’t refer to Trump the person
The GOP wants TACO to be king.
It’s that simple.
They think we hate America,
but we can clearly see that they actually HATE the Constitution.

not that relevant but how many charlie kirk memorials can there be
Trump at the Charlie Kirk memorial event: "They fired sniper rifles at ICE agents, and me. But I made a turn at a good time. I made a turn at a good time. Charlie couldn't believe it, actually."
