This week's post, particularly the audio version is an absolute masterpiece. So now we agree what *should* happen, how do we make it so?
Great read from @iandunt.bsky.social on whether Starmer should stay or go, including the mystery of how, if you’re launching a popular climate, energy, and growth strategy, why wouldn’t you stage a press conference on it?

Labour admits Brexit was terrible. Now it's time to act
For years now, the economic situation facing this country has been buried in the small print

Very good stuff from Sadiq Khan at the Labour Irish society event. He said there are two reasons he loves coming to Labour Conference.

“One is the reception at the Labour Party Irish Society reception.

“The second is to get away from all the Sharia Law in London”

Genuinely the first time I have ever had to hand it to Kemi Badenoch

*Makes "not an anti-vaxxer" the first item in the credit column*
Badenoch has finally found a hard line between the Conservatives and Farage.

I don't find any of this at all difficult to understand. I recently purchased a property and the conveyancing solicitors both calculated and paid the Stamp Duty (from my escrow funds). Apparently many mortgage lenders insist that they do as a condition of advancing the loan amount. 1/5

A word on immigration. Don't prejudge this, just listen to the data, and then consider what the solution is.

The UK has a falling birth rate. This means that - unless things change - each generation will be 25% smaller than the one before.

I think this is said so much it has ended up being accepted axiomatically. I'm not sure it's that unassailable an argument, actually.

The US gave security guarantees twice to Ukraine. They meant very little under Obama in 2014 and under Biden in 2022. Both talked tough, but did not DO enough. 🧵 1/
Any US security guarantees to Ukraine would not be credible if Trump is president, sorry.

Right idea in theory—Russia already broke multiple deals, already attacked aggressively twice, only US can really scare them—but even if Europe got US to agree, it won’t be credible, and therefore cannot work.

Pretty difficult incidentally for individual MPs to outline a bigger vision when the message they get from Number 10 is that Reform is right and delivery will fix everything if only the civil service would stop hiding the 'fix everything instantly' lever.

Our conversation over the last couple of days suggests a complete moral breakdown, at a national scale. Instead of sympathising with far-right protests, politicians should be fucking challenging them.

The UK must immediately recognise Palestinian statehood.

There can be no two state solution if there is no viable state left to call Palestine.
