Will Streeting’s review of mental illness, autism and ADHD just be another Sewell or Cass (gaslighting the nation into agreeing with pre-decided government policy/ideology)?

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.
This is so disgusting.

Are we quite sure she's a real live person?
"15 years ago, Polish workers came here to find opportunity. Now Poland is growing twice as fast as we are," says Kemi Badenoch.

Any ideas what may have happened in the interim?

Autistic people and immigrants are good actually.

Some of us are a) both b) adorable and c) save our reserved British friends money when they are too shy to challenge mistakes on their restaurant bills and we offer to do it for them.

Can’t explain it but of course they want to take away one of the only painkillers that’s safe for pregnancy, a condition that causes weird and unusual pains. these people WANT pregnancy to be a punishment and handicap. they want to control.

Reading @swordsjew.bsky.social's Wild Faith and shocked by the scale and institutionalisation of abuse in evangelical circles.

It must be terrifying to think the devil and demons are hiding around every corner trying to catch you. No wonder they all have that over-alert look in their eyes.

The weird thing about the England flag debate is that as far as I can tell, a bunch of racists are upset that when they advertise their racism by sporting that flag, people think they're racist and that...upsets them?

I love London so much. So much.

Did you know that London has the lowest level of ethnic violence of any city of comparable size in the world?

Multiculturalism has in fact worked here. They just don’t want it to be true because we happen to have a Muslim mayor.
In London, hate will never win.

I wrote a column responding to Ezra Klein’s eulogy for Charlie Kirk, and argued that democracy depends not just on civil disagreement, but on the civic equality that Kirk passionately opposed.

Equality of rights is a baseline precondition for a liberal democracy, and advocating for the end of that condition is not compatible with a commitment to the liberal democratic project.
Ezra Klein is trying in this column to argue that Kirk was doing politics correctly if you just ignore the content of what he was advocating. That he was contributing to American democracy by arguing civilly for the subjugation of women, gay people, trans people. It simply doesn’t work.
I feel like I am taking crazy pills. Charlie Kirk’s ultimate goal, which he said time and time again, would have been the suppression, through threat of violence and the use of state power, of the rights of those he disagreed with, including freedom of expression.

Graham Linehan once took issue with a sketch I did and tweeted about me referring to me not by name but only as to who my boyfriend was and called me an NPC ( non player character.) It was misogynistic and his “standing up for women” schtick is baloney.

Why would a teenager need a professional bra fitter anyway?? Do you own a tape measure? Can you count?

If you can't find a suitable bra without professional help, I really don't think trans women are your biggest problem.

“Men suffer in silence” then why am I constantly hearing about it
this is hilarious to me as a woman on the left because it seems like every conversation is absolutely dominated by this topic, either explicitly or implicitly
The left is completely silent on the subject of men getting laid - which, generally speaking, they are v.interested in doing and will continue to be interested in regardless of whether progressives want to talk about it. So the stage has been left entirely clear for the far-right.

The thing about the Epstein files is that for Trump, deflecting the fact that he went to some parties or wrote some gross notes is child’s play. So whatever is in them must be bad enough that TRUMP thinks is bad. Like, what sexual behaviour could TRUMP think is inexcusable??

Helen Lewis seems to think she's part of a moderate, feminist led branch of the GC movement made up of nice ladies who just care about women's rights and protecting teenagers and are happy to use pronouns and behave courteously. No such movement exists! Any actual feminists have jumped ship long ago

It's so weird to me that people find it inexplicable that women are choosing to have fewer or no children nowadays. Sure, for some people it's related to finances but the hand-wringing ignores the simple explanation that a lot of people just don't want to be parents because it's...not...that...good?
kinda strikes me that there might be a link between the backlash to trauma/“therapy culture” represented by this piece, the rise of biological essentialism, and through it all a kind of intellectual immaturity that refuses the notion that people can harm one another without meaning to

I think an unexpected consequence of all this is that gender neutral bathrooms/fitting rooms could become the norm. A lot of businesses are simply not going to want to deal with complicated exceptions when they could just make everything neutral
