A blast from my past - the Medieval Soldier database takes nearly 300,000 military service records from 1369-1453 and makes them available as a searchable database.

An invaluable resource for understanding medieval warfare, society and the English medieval state. Learn more in the link. 🗃️
We built a database of 290,000 English medieval soldiers – here’s what it reveals
We created the database in order to challenge assumptions about the lack of professionalism of everyday soldiers.

Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! These sewing #needles were made from animal bone some 15,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start. Form follows function! 🧵1/2

He waited until dusk, only to find the tree had already arrived before the sun went down.

Captured from Dutch heathlands 🇳🇱 — where the sun swelled into a blazing, perfect sphere and aligned exactly behind this lone winter tree, turning every branch into a silhouette of molten fire.

One week on from my radioactive iodine treatment. It has not been a brilliant week. Tempted by the sunshine today however, I got myself over to Fawsley for a meander with my camera. Very, very tired now but what a joy it was to be out there again!

Jacques kept the journals all through the war, adding in clippings, maps, photos, sketches, letters, and ephemera along with his own entries.

The journals are part of the collection of private archives digitized by the Somme Archives, which you can search here:

What an amazing document: a four-volume journal/sketchbook/scrapbook kept by Jacques Gogois, a French child in Amiens, during the First World War.

The first volume begins in 1914, when Jacques is seven years old.
