Heddiw rydym yn cofio'r dynion a'r menywod hynny o Went, a gollodd eu bywydau wrth ymladd. Cafodd enw’r diwrnod a gyflwynwyd yn wreiddiol fel Diwrnod y Cadoediad ym 1919, ei newid i Ddiwrnod y Cofio ar ôl yr Ail Ryfel Byd.

Today we remember those men and women of Gwent who have lost their lives in combat. Initially introduced as Armistice Day in 1919, the name was changed to Remembrance Day after the Second World War.

In 1887, a large beacon or bonfire was built upon the Twmbarlwm above Risca to celebrate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria. This fantastic photo shows a large group of men, women and children standing on and around the beacon.

Ym 1887, adeiladwyd goleufa ar y Twmbarlwm uwchben Rhisga i ddathlu Jiwbilî’r Frenhines Fictoria. Mae'r llun gwych hwn yn dangos grŵp mawr o ddynion, menywod a phlant yn sefyll ar yr oleufa ac o’i chwmpas.

Calan Gaeaf hapus! Mae gan ein siroedd lleol - Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Sir Fynwy, Caerffili a Chasnewydd - lawer o atgofion brawychus ar gadw. Edmund Jones mai’r ardal hon oedd â’r nifer mwyaf o ysbrydion a thylwyth teg yng Nghymru i gyd!

Happy Halloween! Our local counties of Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Caerphilly and Newport hold a lot of spooky memories. Edmund Jones claimed this area held the most spirits and fairies across Wales!

On this day, in 1963, Newport RFC beat the New Zealand All Blacks. It was a momentous achievement with the All Blacks winning 35 games in their tour and their only loss being against Newport RFC at Rodney Parade!

Ar y diwrnod hwn, ym 1963, curodd Clwb Rygbi Casnewydd Grysau Duon Seland Newydd. Roedd yn dipyn o gamp. Roedd y Crysau Duon wedi ennill 35 gêm ar eu taith, gan golli un gêm yn unig, yn erbyn Clwb Rygbi Casnewydd yn Rodney Parade!

In the months prior to D-Day, the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion was stationed in and around the Pontypool area between February and May 1944.

Unfortunately, we have very little evidence of their experiences within our collections – but for a small number of articles in the Pontypool Free Press.

Yn ystod y misoedd cyn Dydd-D, lleolwyd 320ain Bataliwn Balŵn Morglawdd yn ardal Pont-y-pŵl a'r cyffiniau rhwng Chwefror a Mai 1944.

Yn anffodus, prin iawn yw'r dystiolaeth sydd gennym o'u profiadau yn ein casgliadau - ond mae nifer fach o erthyglau yn y Pontypool Free Press.

If you were to look through the Monmouth parish records, you would find an entry for an Andrew Davis and Joseph Monmouth. Both baptised in August 1763, each man is described as “a Black belonging to Mr Price.”
