On every public policy committee I sat on - gambling, drugs, animal experiments, law of homicide and others - someone would ask ‘But what would the Daily Mail say about our recommendations?’ I now regret that we never gave the right answer. ‘We shouldn’t care.’

Hard-hitting truth-telling from UCL Prof Anthony Costello….

“The Covid Public Inquiry is a devastating critique of medical advisers, civil servants and politicians who led the UK to the worst public health disaster in a century. More than 230,000 deaths.”

On the centenary of Thatcher's birth, there have been predictable calls for a memorial to her memory. But Britain's 2300 food banks serve that purpose already.

In 2001 I married my wife, Sylvia.
In 2005 I started medical transition. (1/13)

Here's how the real two-tier Britain works:
1. Whatever Nigel Farage says, however stupid, is looped and discussed by the media, while left-wing voices are treated as noises off.
2. Tiny far-right protests get massive airtime, while 10s of 000s gathering for Palestine or green causes are ignored.🧵

They live in gold, we live in rust: why we must destroy the new Gilded Age

Inequality in the west is now at the same level as Rome during slavery. We can’t go on like this. Unless we change peacefully, we risk violence

Dear Keir - following #PMQs today, a reminder of the letter we you sent last week after you repeated false claims about the Green Party's manifesto. Unlike Labour and the Conservatives we were honest about the need to raise taxes on the wealthiest to fund the services we all need.

Plenty studies showing that your postcode is a better predictor of your health outcomes than your genome.
The BBC & Telegraph are trailing Wes Streeting’s technophile health plans, including genomic mapping at birth.
Is this really gonna transform the NHS into a prevention service within 10 yrs, as Wes claims? For v rare genetic conditions, praps. But for the real burden of disease?

Thoughts, #medsky?

In 2022 the UK hit 40C for the first time.

The result was 3,000 excess deaths, over 800 wildfires on a single day, droughts across the country, closed railways and melted roads.

Climate breakdown is a political choice that comes with huge costs. We can choose differently.
UK temperatures of 45C may be possible in current climate, Met Office says
Experts say risk of 40C has almost trebled since 2000, with 50/50 chance of hitting that mark in next 12 years
