A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fell—often by quite a bit.

I'm going to elaborate on this, because holy shit, last night - thank you everyone who engaged in respectful back and forth, it felt like Plato's Republic in here lmao - I had a brain blast

So, the problem: Caesar has come. He intend to end the republic.

This war is completely illegitimate: 60% of Americans disapprove of going to war with Venezuela—74% disapprove war without Congressional approval. Only 19% are in favor.

The people oppose it. Our representatives didn’t approve it. Trump should be removed for this unconstitutional war.

In 2026, California should take what it learned from this task force as well as what overwhelming evidence suggests and introduce a weight tax for passenger vehicles. Non-commercial SUVs and pickup trucks should be prohibitively expensive to own and operate.

I usually struggle to read more than 10 books a year, 12 at best. In 2025 I read 24 plus three very long audiobooks. When I reflect on this past year, I feel proud for giving myself the space to prove to myself that reading is a skill I can still improve on if I just find books I enjoy.

Thanks to a series YIMBY reforms—and high-quality administration—in San Diego, the city has been in the midst of a building boom, even as construction has plummeted elsewhere. The result? Rents are down six months in a row. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/12/17/s...
San Diego rents have fallen for 6 months. Should you ask your landlord for a deal?
San Diego rents are down 0.3% year-over-year to an average $2,520 per month.

Interesting data (from Waymo) showing that robotaxis are significantly safer than the average human driver. This is likely because they respect traffic rules. An NYT op-ed by a neurosurgeon calls for a broader adoption as a public health measure. Thoughts? www.nytimes.com/2025/12/02/o...

at this point it looks like you have to be putting carbon into the atmosphere out of spite if you do buildouts that aren't primarily solar
This is incredible (good news too): “After a 40% fall in 2024 in battery equipment costs, it’s clear we’re on track for another major fall in 2025…The economics for batteries are unrecognizable, & the industry is only just getting to grips with this new paradigm”
www.pv-magazine.com/2025/12/12/b...
Batteries now cheap enough to make dispatchable solar economically feasible
Energy think tank Ember says utility-scale battery costs have fallen to $65/MWh outside China and the United States, enabling solar power to be delivered when needed.

In terms of US politics, Bush v. Gore is the defining event of the century. It set the template: a ruthless right that instinctively seeks power & doesn't give a shit about rule of law...and a bunch of hapless, feckless octogenarian Dems worried about the good opinion of centrist opinion columnists.
The 25th anniversary of Bush v Gore is today. The conspiracy mongering & corruption of the GOP has been brewing for a long time.

Roberts, Barrett and Kavanaugh were all on Bush's legal team, where they pushed unfounded legal theories. SC justices were already enmeshed in voter fraud myths.
Here's Sandra Day O'Connor endorsing News Max levels of voter fraud conspiracies in the 2000 election.

this fact is the definitive judgment on kirk's life
ultimately, no one even grieved Charlie Kirk. he was just another thing for the worst people on earth to get outraged over. and when the outrage of real events wasn't enough, they invented new ones.

not even his wife saw his death as anything other than an opportunity.
my read is they were trying to whip up the usual frenzy, but then the effort got blown up by Candace Owens saying The Jews did it

I hope @timheidecker.bsky.social takes care of his health. If that's why he must end the show, I understand and wish him the best. His body has been through the ringer for On Cinema over the years. It's amazing he's still with us.

I don't really have any expensive hobbies since it is just playing the same 3 games, reading, and self studying math. So I will be damned if a president tells me to give up my 12 packs of Blackwing Matte pencils in various styles and colors.
Trump: "You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need 1 or 2. They don't need that many. You always need steel. You don't need 37 dolls for your daughter. 2 or 3 is nice. So we're doing things right."

During ratification of the 14th Amendment, senators discussed whether the Citizenship Clause would apply to the children of immigrants and resoundingly concluded that it did. The text and history all point in one direction and the counter-arguments are patently fraudulent. I am going to lose my mind
The evidence is the text. All you have to do is read the Constitution.

Did you really need to circle the big red number that takes up a third of the screen?
Enten: "Trump's net approval rating is at -15 -- the lowest it has been during his entire second term... the Democratic lead on the generic ballot has widened. Trump's political position has worsened. I don't think how you can look at both and conclude anything other than that Dems won the shutdown"

I have lots of opinions about political journalism, but mainly I think there should be less of it. Less time devoted to scoops, speculation, who is winning, who is positioning themselves to win, etc. There are so few journalistic resources, and fewer all the time. Devote them to something else.
