This is my take, too. And education - and being educated - is being ridiculed and minimized. This has led to a sadly uninformed electorate, devoid of not only critical thinking but also of the historical background against which to measure information. Ripe for being led astray... oh, wait...
The problem isn’t misinformation, it’s people not having the skill to critically evaluate the information that comes across their path. We don’t have a misinformation crisis, as much as we have an ignorance crisis. People, deprived of education, and unmotivated to seek it, don’t know how to think.
