For 45 days, Rümeysa Öztürk was kept away from her doctoral studies, denied proper medical care, and isolated from her loved ones.

Since her release from the for-profit ICE detention center, she's returned to her studies and is using her voice to advocate for others.
‘I sometimes wake up in tears for friends still there.’ Rümeysa Öztürk’s six weeks in ICE detention. - The Boston Globe
As she was held in Louisiana, the fight to free Öztürk took place in protests and in the courts.

A million Muslims live in New York City. We belong here, as does every other New Yorker.

This is vile Islamophobia from the Councilwoman and it has no place in our city.

It's impressive, in its way, to make cowardice not just part of your political identity, but ALL of it. When the book on Mike Johnson is written...it will molder in unopened cardboard boxes.
Mike Johnson refuses to comment on Trump’s post about Rob Reiner and runs away from reporters.

Steve isn’t here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.
Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

A deeply sad morning, with heartbreaking mass killings in Providence & Sydney.

Innocent students killed in a classroom. At least 11 people by gunmen at a Hanukkah celebration.

Too many guns here. Frightening levels of antisemitism globally. So much senseless violence & hate.

Apparently it can always get worse. The full version of the new U.S. National Security Strategy, aptly named “NSC-1488” by the wags, calls for actively pulling Poland, Austria, Hungary and Italy from the #EU. And supporting far right.

US sides with Putin.

Pete Hegseth’s “Department of War” has killed at least 87 people in strikes on boats in the Pacific and Caribbean. The regime claims these boats were carrying drugs destined for the US — a claim that has been refuted by evidence in several cases (and wouldn’t justify the strikes, even if true).

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

Amnesty International, interviewing migrant detainees, identifies use of the confinement box. There can be no denying it is a torture prison

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

Thing is, we DID hear about it at his confirmation hearing.

Every single senator who voted to confirm Hegseth knew he held these views about the laws of war.

They voted to confirm him anyway.
Everyone should read this terrifying thread about Hegseth’s published views wrt war crimes. It’s pretty fucking radical …. We needed to hear about this in his confirmation hearing.
A chapter in Hegseth’s book is literally titled “More Lethality, Less Lawyers.”

It’s almost as if there were signs!

A reminder for those who are not aware: "remigration" is the process of deporting all non-white people from a country. It includes citizens and is, by definition, ethnic cleansing.

And to be clear: this is not fake. I just screenshot it myself.

WHOA. Trump says he will pardon Juan Orlando Hernandez, who once said that he wanted to “shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos.” He had people killed as part of his narco-trafficking ring, which he at times operated directly out of his presidential office.
