This holds up. Want a fantasy reframing of Tess d’Ubervilles with dragons and (maybe) a giant serpent?

Read Tess of the Road! Written by Rachel Hartman. Loved it so much I bought a signed copy.
"This story doesn't need a sandworm"

This is almost always wrong. Arguably, EVERY story benefits from adding a huge subterranean worm with quasi-mystical or semi-supernatural powers, or equivalent (similar to Moby Dick).

Obviously the bigger the worm, the more literary quality it adds.

Finished Accomplice to the Villain on my vacation. Which was perfect. They always end on a cliff hanger, but it’s wonderful seeing characters grow.

I hesitate to call it cozy. It’s not really, but I feel cozy while reading it.

Hawaii is beautiful. Just don’t go in December unless you want to hear holiday songs in the worst way possible.

Seriously giving me Ramses II vibes.

“I didn’t lose this war. I created the first peace treaty ever.”
President Donald Trump is eager to be recognized as a peacemaker.

His administration obliged by renaming the building that houses the U.S. Institute of Peace in downtown D.C. https://wapo.st/48zkAzK

Quentin Tarantino has been an asshole for years.

Why do y’all care now?

Just kidding. I know why.

Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents.

They’ve had their necks kneeled on.

They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear.

At least three citizens were pregnant when agents detained them.
More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days.
The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

Listening to a Hercule Poirot book and I will forever believe the producer who let Kenneth Branagh (and Branagh) play Poirot was the worst casting decision ever.

Tell me you don’t understand Poirot without telling me you don’t understand Poirot.

BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

I can’t tell you how many admin people in libraries will work for over 20 years in one state then move to another where they work just long enough to qualify for another pension then retire at 65.

Meanwhile the rest of us are begging for meaningful policy changes.
AOC has said this about Marjorie Taylor Greene retiring:

"She's carefully timing her departure just 1-2 days after her pension kicks in and after making millions of dollars insider trading stocks for weapons manufacturers and others while in office. "

I would love for libraries to lead the way and demonstrate responsible use of AI. But…

1. No such thing as responsible use. Most usage violates a lot of our values.

2. We have no money to pay developers to create something useful (and then it would violate our values).

Using E.B. White to name the horrible shit they're doing is particularly galling considering

(From his essay "Freedom" published in July 1940, it's available in the collection ONE MAN'S MEAT, but you can find the whole thing online. I recommend picking it up.)

I can reassure the New York Times that networks of mutual protection, and misogynist retaliation efforts that benefit abusive men at the expense of the young women they prey upon, are very much still intact post-Me Too.
This is nauseating: “As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement.” A “Gone With the Wind” framing for sexual abuse and harassment.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

Alright Dems, this is a can of corn. “Republicans are willing to keep you from your family’s Thanksgiving.”
The first day of the Trump administration’s flight cuts at the nation’s 40 busiest airports passed without widespread disruption, but uncertainty about cancellations and the air traffic control system overall has some travelers rethinking whether to fly at all.
Shutdown Casts a Shadow Over Travelers’ Thanksgiving Flight Plans
Frustration with cancellations and concerns about air traffic control are driving passengers away from flying and casting a shadow over Thanksgiving plans.
