Curtailing people’s ability to read widely and carefully, to locate, assess, and compare different sources for themselves, and to write in their own voice about what they find and what it means, is arguably more effective than censorship. It is also one of the most obvious effects of generative AI.

I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff

Hulu cut the livestream but at least #Oscars got me humming “Ease On Down the Road”

The deep animal fear that my AirPods will experience a freak failure and everyone on this train will know I’m listening to “Uptown Girl”.

A very important reminder. ICE can't go inside a house without the permission of someone there. Administrative warrants are not judicial warrants.
Just FYI, administrative warrants (like the ones used by ICE) are not judicial warrants (used by cops, signed by a judge).

You do NOT legally have to open the door for an ICE officer with an administrative warrant *no matter what the ICE officer says.*

Bit by bit putting together my emergency kit- just ordered a nice first aid kit from the Red Cross. I wouldn’t have thought that I live in a natural disaster zone, but I think we have to assume we all do now.

If you've managed to remain safe from the LA fires but have lost power and are using a portable generator, remember to keep it outdoors and make sure your carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are working. 1 generator can produce as much CO as hundreds of cars and CO can kill in minutes.

For those evacuating with pets in LA: Hilton’s Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites, Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Tru and Canopy brands are all 100% pet friendly. Even cats! And a lot of hotels are waiving pet fees atm. Good on u Hilton! Pun intended: that’s hot.

Texas is about to freeze over. When this happens, there's usually statewide blackouts.
When it happens to us, we lose water, power, and wifi

There are very few times when I don't need help.

please repost this or help, especially since I may not be online to beg for help if wifi tanks

Since this has come up repeatedly in the last few days—no, you do not need to take down your bird feeder because of avian flu. The USDA is not worried about spillover from songbirds. The wild reservoirs are WATERFOWL.

My friend’s approach is to just yell “Phone!”

I haven’t had an occasion to try it, but I think it’s genius. My fear is always that I’m creating more of a disturbance than the phone is, and this is succinct and uh…very direct.
There was also a woman who wouldn’t turn off her phone. It kept going off over and over again, and she was checking it, and lighting up the rows behind her.

Finally a man two rows back hissed, in a fittingly vampiric voice, “Turn off your fucking phone!”
