When I was a junior and more anxious teacher, yeah, I reached for control. It was a substitute for skill, knowledge, confidence, etc. Now it is SUCH A RELIEF to just not be a classroom cop. My class & classroom are a system that must function coherently, but there's no control for its own sake.

Yep. "I need you to do X by Y date so I can do Z on time" is a really useful thing to make explicit. As is "I need you to do X by Y date because if you do it later, we'll have finished with Z, which X intended to precede in the order of what we're doing."
Exactly this. And I often really interrogate structure as I teach .. what is *driving* this constraint? Is it about pedagogy? Or control?
I also will explain myself - this deadline is driven by the date grades are due, and I need this many days to do finals graded.

At the end of my rhetoric class I always ask students what they learned that they'll use again, and the answers ALWAYS delight me. This was a really hard term for a lot of them and they LEARNED the heck out of it!!

For my kid's high school graduation party we had a decorative dispenser of Shirley Temples and a bowl of maraschino cherries and many of the adults were into it.
I do not drink because I have almost no tolerance for it anymore (one margarita is too much).

For my kid's high school graduation party we had a decorative dispenser of Shirley Temples and a bowl of maraschino cherries and many of the adults were into it.
Last week I THRILLED non-drinkers with tiny cans of Fever Tree grapefruit soda mixer. "I feel like Andre the Giant! My hand is huge!"
I do not drink because I have almost no tolerance for it anymore (one margarita is too much).
