@ericroper.bsky.social brushing over the role media played in propping up Frey. Where was the media condemnation of the deeply racist snake oil attack ads on Robin or the AOM flyers that darkened Fateh's skin? Why did no one care about Frey deleting his texts and voicemails when ICE was in town?
Some thoughts on Eric Roper’s finger-wag in the mayor’s race: www.startribune.com/jacob-frey-r...
1. Asking “what chance did [Davis & Hampton] have ignores Frey’s agency is creating the race‘s dynamics. Frey sued the most moderate hope (Emily Koski) to cut off her money & intimated others. 1/
Roper: Jacob Frey can thank the far left for handing him another term
Frey was a vulnerable incumbent. But progressives banked on the wrong guy to beat him.

People are out here blaming RCV for Jacob's win. And I cannot stress this enough: RCV had literally nothing to do with it. Everything about this outcome was entirely predictable. Jacob had huge structural advantages: compliant local media, off-cycle election, PAC $, patronage networks.

The time is NOW to get involved in your local DFL unit. If you want to see change in the DFL, change will only happen from within, not by complaining on social media. At a more basic level, we simply need more volunteers, to run caucuses and conventions, and to win elections.

With this election over, my next organizing projects are 1) coalition building for the DFL, to build our bench to win in 2026 and 2) resisting the Minneapolis Charter Commission's efforts to weaken the separation of powers.🧵

Bad news for progressives:

W7: Cashman loses, 52-46.

W5: Ethrophic Burnett down 38-28. Needs to make up a ton of ground in ranked choices.

Good news:

W10 & 2. Chughtai and Wonsley with big wins over very well funded opposition.

W8: Stevenson 56-39.

Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.

Mandani's win in NYC proves that a constructive, tangible vision to improve people's lives can win over merely chasing the talking points of your opponent, or appearing more "moderate"

I’m ranking @dewayneforminneapolis.com number one but on record I am so appreciative that we have a full slate of Black candidates that will each steward Minneapolis with compassion and integrity.
Please Minneapolis we need to get Frey out of city hall.

Reporting from Powderhorn, guess what? The police, who’ve been absent in the neighborhood since George Floyd, are suddenly back in the week of the election. We’ve had 5 years of peace and quiet and low crime and now the sirens return.
I’m asking everyone to vote for a new Mayor by Tuesday and rank all 3 of Omar Fateh, Dewayne Davis, and Jazz Hampton in whichever order you prefer. I’ve worked at City Hall for the last 4 years and from my personal experiences I believe the City desperately needs a new mayor.

Long thread 🧵

Typical @mayorjacobfrey.bsky.social campaign interaction

The one conversation I had with Jacob was good. He gave me his time and full attention. He was clear and straight with me on the issues where we were aligned or had difference

Interactions with staff have been numerous & poor

What are some food businesses in Minneapolis who have the guts to do one or a limited number of food items exceptionally well? Example: Matt’s Bar

(State Fair vendors don’t count)

In these last few days, we're working hard to activate the winning coalition we've built over the last year. We need all the support we can get to make sure that we finish with a win. Whether its $5 or $500, anything you can give right now makes a difference.

Me: “Since moving to #Minneapolis, I've been alarmed by how scare tactics, not vision, are central to Frey’s campaign, [like anti-Muslim op eds or negative consequences of DSA in power.]”

Frey canvasser: “but if Fateh is elected we’ll become like Portland or Seattle with open air drug markets!”

🤦‍♂️
Frey canvasser came by my door.

God help me, I can’t seem to help any Frey folks understand that vision wins and scare tactics (the socialists are coming!), exclusion (a la the Ward 2 caucus), are a bankrupt strategy.

Come back when you have a vision. Come back when you can rep the full city.

Q: “how do we make our policing more effective?”

A: “different neighborhoods have differing needs, in my neighborhood (N #mpls) most incidents are interpersonal, community-led interruptor programs work, other areas have other needs…now is the moment to lock in the consent decree reforms…”
Listening to @dewayneforminneapolis.com’s remarks this evening—political fundraising aside—I cannot fathom why Davis isn’t leading this race. He’s the full package: collaborative, visionary, poised and smart. Rank this man!

Q from S. #mpls resident: “How would you deal with homeless encampments?”

“There are only 4 city workers to coordinate with the county, we need a homeless team—1 per ward—to coordinate between non profits, the county, etc…With a coordinated response we can stop camps from forming in the 1st place.”
