Incident response & management+human factors in software development & operations.

“How many incidents does it take to get to the center of a sociotechnical system?"

(Yes, that @jpaulreed on The Old Bird Site/Mastodon)
Huge, HUGE #slowclap to Snowflake for dashboards that you actively have to click a "run" button to get it to display the current data.

(Because when I load the web-based dashboard, I am ABSOLUTELY EXPECTING IT TO SHOW ME STALE DATA.)

Last week @theverge.com published my essay exploring the limitations of large-language models. This week, that same essay is cited by a federal judge in Michigan to distinguish the process of human reasoning from what these models do. Very, very gratifying.

holy shit, an accurate legal critique of LLMs. LLMs don't reason because they're just stitching together plausible-looking sentences indifferent to the content

Whether it's Donald Trump murdering the survivors aboard a sinking boat or Barack Obama wearing a tan suit to a press conference, both presidents engaged in some truly norm-busting behavior.

The most interesting thing about Trump's [most recent] racist tirade is how much he's slurring his speech... it's so bad, he sounds drunk.

I know it's too easy to grow numb to the constant flood of bigotry that comes out of his mouth but it does seem morally important you don't allow yourself or anyone else to become desensitized to this vile racism as a normal part of our politics

Instead of tone policing people's attire, Mr. Secretary, why don't you... I dunno... unfuck the air traffic controller shortage Reagan needlessly created back when you were learning how—and this is true—how to be a professional lumberjack.

The real heroes:

Librarians: "Fuck you, come back with a warrant."
One girl said “it doesn’t matter if you ban a book because everyone can find that information online” and then I blew their minds by talking about how your search history can be monitored and sold to the government without your permission, but your library borrowing history requires a warrant.

If you invented a robot that sometimes cleaned my house really well & quickly & saved me lots of work—but *often* just moved things around without really cleaning—& *sometimes* added germs *to* the surfaces—such that just to be safe, I always had to clean after it

I don’t think I’d buy that robot

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

“Resilience” does NOT mean maintaining service levels in the face of upsets or changing operational dynamics (immaterial of why those dynamics may have changed).

It’s actually exactly the opposite.
