By day I'm a sociologist, by night I write fantasy fiction. In between I cook, when my cat gets off my lap long enough to allow it. Just got here, HI!!!

Boy, these last eight days feel like a good reminder why democracies generally avoid letting people who attempt a coup come back to power….

It bears repeating and repeating ad nauseum: If you withheld support from Biden/Harris as a means of advocating for Palestinian nationhood and the aspirations of the Palestinian people and you did not see this moment coming: You are a performative, sloganeering and politically incompetent rube.
here's audio of Trump saying he wants to "clear out" Gaza and move Palestinians elsewhere

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

It's especially important to realize that at a time of water shortages contributing to the wildfires in LA, AI uses an absurd amount of water to keep its datacenters cool.
“In order to shoot off one email per week for a year, ChatGPT would use up 27 liters of water, or about one-and-a-half jugs… that means if one in 10 U.S. residents—16 million people—asked ChatGPT to write an email a week, it’d cost more than 435 million liters of water.”
AI doesn’t just require tons of electric power. It also guzzles enormous sums of water.

I thought the power company's email about "outages due to natural disaster" referred to the blizzard outside my window in NY. But no, it was my old provider in CA, because they're on fire. And our new pres blames his enemies and denies climate change. So yeah, from here it looks like apocalypse.

First real snow of the season. Gorgeous! Power is out and schools are all closed, which is not nearly so exciting when I'm no longer attending school or teaching at university, hm.

I psyched up for a Difficult Conversation, formed plans to be effective, constructive, kind. The meeting was postponed, leaving me holding this carefully crafted argument in both hands, like a spell I’ve painstakingly prepared but can’t cast yet. It unraveled, edge by string by atom. And now? Dust.

Omg I've been thinking this same thing, except replace Walgreens with Kmart. Or as we used to call it, with our worst French accent parodies, the K-marchay. Which is even more perfect here.

I complained aloud about the annoying buzzing of the cluster fly in my office window. More keep returning no matter how many I kill. But I couldn't get up to swat this one because I had a cat on my lap.

Said cat jumped to the windowsill and ate the fly. Coincidence?

Yeah, probably.

My mother is a fine artist printmaker, so I have been seeped in woodblock prints and engravings my whole life and love-love-love them beyond all reason. So how have I never learned all about ukiyo-e until now? Mind and heart expanded! ❤️

Lum helped popularize Japanese and Chinese Woodblocks in the West after falling in love with the art form on her honeymoon in Japan. She spent her seven-weeks in Japan, searching for a printmaker to teach her the traditional ukiyo-e method!

I'm new here, and I'll probably post a lot more about social issues and SFF and food. But it seems right to start with a post of my cat, the cutest, softest, best little black kitty in the whole world (YMMV). I named her Nyx, after the Greek goddess of the night.
