At events I always insist that I enjoy the daily act of writing, and I'm often met with skepticism. But an activity can be frustrating/challenging and still bring joy. In fact, that's part of it-- like playing a video game on a too-easy difficulty setting, a frictionless existence is not rewarding.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life

The new AI slop thing is having ChatGPT slurp a description of one of your short stories or podcasts from a website, spit out a query email pretending as if they read it or listened to said work, and then pitch you some shit service they're offering. I swear I get like three of these per day now. 1/

Facêboók is showing ÃĪ generated reels of people shouting (stupid) political opinions without flagging them as fake, and its total rage bait, and I've no idea if the traffic they're generating is real, but when folks lose the ability to discern reality, democracy suffers. Why are we OK with this?

If ICE agents believe what they're doing is legal, then they shouldn't need to hide behind masks. The fact that they do hide says everything you need to know about them: they don't want to be identified, because they know what they're doing is shameful and immoral.
