I do not understand why government officials resign when asked to do something bad.

The resignations will no longer be treated by the public like a scandal. It’ll be out of the news within 24 hours. People should stay and force the White House to fire them.

This is the single most meaningful "sign" of good character.

1) Actually cares about other people's health (And their own!)
2) Is willing to inconvenience themselves to practice their values
3) Believes in science
4) Doesn't need to be told to be a good person
