Sedation dentistry is no longer weird. Phone cameras are really good. The price of solar panels has dropped by tens of thousands. Southern white rhinos, giant pandas, Arabian oryx and Stellar sea lions are no longer endangered.

And, I can testify, modern cancer treatments are fucking amazing.
Please give me an unironic list of things that have gotten better over the last ten years because I’m spiraling.

I’ll start: you can buy an enormous TV from Costco for like $100 bucks now.

If you’re sick of doomscrolling, might I suggest doing something creative in flow state?
Spent the morning with some friends and now I'm optimizing systems in Minecraft, sitting on the couch whispering to myself "I'm a titan of industry"

“Upfront design helps this” doesn’t work if you build a culture where people are disincentivized to build resilience into the system

“Testing and architecture” fails if people are penalized for valuing non coding tasks

Slop happens when velocity and PRs per dev are your biggest devex metrics

The big “why do you hate AI?” Thread got comments and quotes turned off, but here’s the main reason I hate AI:

It’s being developed by the worst people on the planet solely to enrich themselves at the expense and labor of the world’s vulnerable populations. Everything else stems from that

I think Hazel nailed it, in terms of the issue with de-skilling. I think that code generation is a pretty good use case in terms of how good the technology is, but I’m concerned that it’s going to make people worse at coding, especially newer engineers.
I realized something recently, which is that we're building AI tools completely backwards.

While I was aware that there's some de-skilling happening already, I finally clicked a bunch of pieces together and decided to write this to talk about how we can do *better*

Stop Building AI Tools Backwards | Hazel Weakly
I’ve been reading this week about how humans learn, and effective ways of transferring knowledge. In addition, I’ve also had AI in the back of my mind, and...

Apparently my ideal form of comedy has become stand-up that makes me feel feelings deeply

This was funny and excellent, the parallels to my experience with ADHD made it feel very personal and relatable. I feel queasy, belly laughs alongside gut punches leaving me fucked up tonight but wanting more

A #squirrel gets gently brushed and clearly enjoys it.
When the scratching stops, it taps for more. This reaction is common in #mammals, as grooming and gentle touch can trigger calming responses and even release endorphins.

Also, it may shock you, but it’s *easier* to test for these things than for most types of “technical aptitude”

As a bonus, in my experience, it’s had a stronger correlation to job performance to boot
The way I solve this now is by making cheating essentially structurally impossible. You can’t cheat at a “test” where the entire point is assessing:

1. Do you have intellectual humility
2. Do you work well with others
3. Do you evaluate info coherently + critically
4. Can you adapt on the fly

It is a deliberate strategy to distract and disorient those of us who are not nihilists.

The joy they take in seeing liberal tears and tizzy fits is disgusting. They don't get mine.

They don't get my tears. They get my stoicism and my rage, and carefully metered doses of my attention.
This is an important point from a great thread of advice. Sometimes people get confused thinking that paying less attention is like downplaying the situation when it can be part of a deliberate strategy to stay in the game long term.
This is a strategy, y'all. I can't find the Bannon quote I'm looking for, but he was like "I throw out three crazy, Overton window-expanding ideas a day, and watch the left chase them all day long".

Who wins when I can't focus? The fascists win. Fuck those guys.
