kind of crazy to see that a hurricane has never made landfall in Virginia, Maryland, or Delaware in ~170 years of recorded history. I wonder if that will generally hold true into the future as climate change promotes stronger jet streams and more steering of TCs away from the US in the mid-latitudes
It's finally done. Over 3 days of hand-plotting 173 years' worth of data. The end result is unbelievable.

What an incredible dataset to look at.

Some perspective for people who are saying they hope there is a government shutdown. Government workers are real people. Your friends, your neighbors, even maybe your family. Some of us are still required to work during a shutdown, and guess what? We do not get paid for that work until…(1/2)

A major loss for the OU and earth science communities. I will always remember my 1-on-1 meeting w/ Berrien during a faculty interview. Despite being the dean w/ a million responsibilities, he had actually taken the time to read my application & was so excited and supportive. Truly a great man ❤️

Here's an analysis of the LRC's ability to predict long-term temperatures...

Halfway into December, and it's not looking good... So far, you'd be better off just calling every day "normal" and take your hits that way. Using LRC was worse than NOT MAKING A FORECAST.

And finally, I like to gripe about the NWS a lot, but they did an EXCELLENT job with this forecast.

But people I talked to in Asheville still didn't get it, or didn't know the severity of it, or got it too late.

This communication breakdown led to confusion, and unfortunately lost lives. WHY?

there are tens of thousands, if not more, of cases just like this. US healthcare is a for-profit racket, and there's a reason our life expectancies are declining. it's so that the rich can have second homes
Storytime.

In 2005, my mom died from cancer, but the real cause was the actions taken by an insurance company 12 years earlier. What happened to her was evil, hard to identify or fight, and hidden from the public by legal mechanisms. Because of that, I have no idea how often it has happened.
