🚨 New paper alert: Exclusionary political rhetoric alone can drive people to leave their hometowns

In Poland, anti-LGBTQ resolutions by 100 local governments caused a rise in migration intentions, reflected in job search

Excellent thread 👏

German Reunification Day invites both gratitude and reflection.
Gratitude, because the peaceful revolution of 1989 was nothing short of a miracle — a bloodless dismantling of a repressive regime.
Reflection, because the wounds of the transition still mark the country —and because

The lack of spines among tech CEOs is pathetic... 🤮

Of course, the European leaders did the same to some degree, but at least this was to save Ukraine 💙💛
Incredible clip of tech CEOs fawning over Donald Trump. Someone store this clip in the underground archive vault

Yet, I am still extremely sad about IZA's main assets - the institute itself, its postdoc program, it's Berlin and Bonn campus, the guest program and the workshop series - being cancelled. It remains a big loss.

It's fantastic that the network is saved.

But IZA as an institute closing down is still a tremendous loss
Unfortunately, the "institute" itself has not found a new home. only its most tangible assets, the network and the discussion paper series, remain. Its postdoc program, the international campus in Bonn with its vibrant guest program, the workshop series, and the summer school, remain lost.

Incredible feeling to finally see it published 🤩

What are the macro effects of making UI more generous?

In this paper we seek to answer this contentious question 📝

We find increases in aggregate unemployment, driven by both longer UI durations & increased inflows 💡
"What is the effect of extending unemployment benefits on unemployment? How relevant are different channels for the total effect: search effort, separations and spill-over?"

Russian attacks on Ukraine just this past night.

Crazy to see this constant barrage and then see some question whether getting Russian oil and gas is indeed the right step

A lot of attention is rightfully on gender inequalities in the labour market and, to a lesser degree, on inequalities in unpaid work ⚖️

But men falling behind in education and the lack of debate around this is also a big societal problem. Great paper 👇

I don’t know about the paper but agree with this being a *super* important open issue and the statement that worst case use is happening in schools.

It will be key to promote the willingness to learn & think (which LLMs can help with) and not laziness (which LLMs currently seem to often do).
This paper confirms my belief that figuring out how to effectively employ LLMs at scale in education is one of the most important research problems of the day (and no, the answer is not “replace teachers with AI”)

Huge potential returns, and the worst case use of AI is already happening in schools.
"The meta-analysis results of this study confirm the positive impacts of ChatGPT on learning performance, learning
perception, and higher-order thinking,"

Some caveats in the paper & with early meta-analysis, but a examination of all 51 experimental studies suggests ChatGPT helps learning.

Warum nach den Erfahrungen des 19. und 20. Jh noch irgendwer glauben kann, Nationalismus, Rassismus und Extremismus wären eine super Idee, wird mir immer unbegreiflich sein.
