Trying to get anything substantial achieved in January is almost impossible in football. The transfer window brings chaos, however prepared you are if others are acting irrationally then you are forced to be reactive.

Then nothing actually happens until the last 72 hours anyway.

Man, Leeds are just SO so good this season.

In any typical Championship season there are like 2-4 excellent teams and then [Everyone Else].

This year Leeds are miles apart in performance, and one of the best defensive teams I can remember in the league.

I made this point in June, that football at the elite level was becoming more tactical homogenous. That said, when there’s an orthodoxy then heterodoxy can flourish as a practical alternative.
This excerpt from a very good piece is an extraordinarily revealing insight into modern football.

Hiring multiple high profile staff into overlapping roles.

Do you really need a Technical Director, Sporting Director, Director of Recruitment, and CEO (previously a Football Operations guy)?

What do they do all day?

I’ve often pointed out changing a manager without changing players is unlikely to make much difference. Clive points out 14 of last 15 new managers in EPL won less than 5 of first ten games.

The advertised role of a sporting director is to look after the long term of the club, building up systems and processes.

In reality every time a sporting director changes so do most of the staff (recruitment, data etc). I know of clubs on the third rebuild in 5 years, building up from scratch.
