“Bove stated that D.O.J. would need to consider telling the courts ‘fuck you’ and ignore any such order.” This story is just a blockbuster in every way - exposing Bove & others to both contempt and a suite of bar ethics charges. Hope to add more as time permits, but the whistleblower a hero.

Great thread by Prof. Lee Kovarsky regarding the implications of a court in the Northern District of Texas declining to certify a class of Venezuelan migrants who have the right to raise habeas challenges to their potential removal to CECOT in El Salvador under Trump’s spurious AEA proclamation.

Incredible scoop! Career officials inside the Trump administration first viewed the case of Mr. Abrego like any normal case of a wrongful deportation — they began looking for ways to bring him back, as happens normally when ICE makes mistakes.

Then the White House got involved, and blew it up.

It turns out that if you gut public goods, you create far greater private costs.
Trump has already slashed the U.S. Forest Service's workforce by 10%, with more firings expected.

This is a recipe for disaster, as we explained in January: prospect.org/environment/...

One of my most memorable grad school experiences was hearing Pat Schroeder describe fighting for this after discovering that even all the lab rats in pharmaceutical tests were male .
Well the NIH has cancelled the Women's Health Initiative, the largest study of women in history

It has been running continuously since 1991 and has provided massive key knowledge about diseases in women

Unreal

Personally, I think it should be front page news for at least a month if a sitting US President is using falsified evidence to try and deny due process to a man who has committed no crime, but that’s just me

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants

the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever

they aren’t going into universities’ endowments

they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research
There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy

Harvard & others must counter this quickly

The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value

Just so we’re clear, everybody calling Kilmar Abrego Garcia a “terrorist” or a “gang member” are lying, and they know they’re lying, and they repeat it for purposes of confusing people who don’t follow this stuff closely into accepting what was done to him.

Another troubling sign that the Trump admin is defying the Supreme Court, which said that they MUST give anyone potentially subject to the Alien Enemies Act "reasonable time" to "actually seek habeas relief" before any AEA removal.

Now DOJ and ICE say they won't even commit to giving 24 hours!
Last night, US Judge Sweeney in Colo granted district-wide (state-wide) class habeas TRO to stop Trump from summarily removing aliens under his Alien Enemies Act proclamation. @ACLU attys had warned that, despite SCOTUS ruling, Admin won't commit to providing even 24 hrs notice.

Bone chilling.

A court ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia to stay in the United States.

The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that he was illegally removed. Trump is pretending he won the ruling 9-0.

“This revocation will be silent.” Absolutely horrifying.
Öztürk's attorneys filed an extra exhibit (#12, ECF 91-1 on Friday, and posted it to their website today (Sunday).

It's an exhibit from her immigration case, a State Dept. memo documenting her visa revocation and that "this revocation will be silent" for "ICE ongoing operational security."

The fact that #SCOTUS hasn't yet ruled in Abrego Garcia isn't proof of *how* the justices are going to rule.

But the longer it takes, the more it suggests that there isn't a majority of the Court who views this dispute with the same *urgency* that so many of us do. And that's a problem unto itself.

Interesting choice of words in the government’s SCOTUS application, which refers to Abrego Garcia as an “enemy alien.”

The government has claimed that Garcia was removed under the Immigration and Nationality Act, **not** the Alien Enemies Act.

THIS is why due process matters. Because when ICE has to actually prove to an independent adjudicator whether someone is actually a member of a gang or not, they often fall flat on their face and judges are SHOCKED at how ramshackle and shoddy ICE's work on this stuff is.

They get it wrong a LOT!
