Good thread on one conservative German effort to defame and discredit postcolonial theory as antisemitic, extremist and unscientific. Nothing entirely new in the abstracts, but unsettling to see how concentrated and extreme this is from a supposedly center right institution.

It‘s that time of year again when students ask for extensions. When they do, consider this: do you think academics always submit book manuscripts, chapters for edited collections, reviews or corrections for articles, books and chapters to editors on time? Do you?

Lumping them together as “AI” gives readers the impression that a single class of tool is discerning novel protein structures, teasing subtle patterns out of mountains of LHC data, writing a student’s History 101 paper, and arguing a ketamine-addled billionaire could post up Shaq in his prime. No.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Just had pretty much exactly this conversation with my dad, except Germany. Coming from the much colder Midwest it can be hard to wrap your head around, but the length of summer days here is the most noticeable for me.
For those who don't realise how dark it gets in winter in the UK... It's more northerly than you think. I'm not even in the real north of the country and I'm approximately at the same latitude as Edmonton in Canada. The days are short. And the skies are almost always covered in a sheet of grey cloud
