Elephants keep coming to Andhra Pradesh, driven by habitat loss & climate change, with deadly results for humans & elephants alike. Last month, @namratakolachalam.bsky.social and I spent a week meeting with farmers across the state for a series about increasing human-elephant conflict.
Interesting thread on the risks of assuming everyone shares your cultural context. As a sidenote, I feel like I rarely see anyone reading or talking about CJ Cherryh, even though (again, it seems to me!) so much modern sci-fi is shaped by her sociological approach to world-building.
By that point, though, the heavy lifting of the Radch was already done. And to date, I have only read CP and the Hydrogen Sonata.

By the same token, people who were immersed in Banks' work almost never read CJ Cherryh, because her work wasn't widely available in the UK.

This highlights a big problem I have with my disillusionment with Indian Cinema, which is that you barely hear about a lot of it.
Kanu Behl (director of Agra) today shared a joint statement from many Indian indie filmmakers about how access to independent films is actively suppressed in India. Great to see them speaking out; the PVR-Inox monopoly has been terrible for distribution, and the OTT platforms aren't much better. 📽️

There are 6 programmes, in three of which, scientists are using AI to speed up tasks. The usage of large datasets and machine learning in drug discovery isn’t new. But the headlines make it seem as if ChatGPT is going to suggest new drugs. Why are we doing this?

My watchlist of Indian movies keeps growing, sad to say. Some of them like Sthal and Kudumbasthan are available on platforms like Zee5 (which I don't have) but I've been struggling to find others: Feminichi Fatima, Victoria, Agra, etc. Want to watch Muthayya too but it's only on ETV 😕 #desisky

Had a lovely meal at the women-run Mahim Koliwada Seafood Plaza, which just reopened post-monsoon. Great view, inquisitive but polite cats, and excellent fresh crab, prawn, pomfret and many more. Worth a visit!

As transparently fake pretexts for wars of aggression go, this might be even more obviously ridiculous than "weapons of mass destruction," which is really saying something.

Incredibly stupid and incredibly telling that — as the Epstein emails reveal Trump's links to man who sex trafficked young girls — liberal social media is flooded with homophobic jokes aimed at Trump.

Teltumbde argues that bureaucratization of caste hinders its annihilation. Fine to disagree, but today I've seen him called "RSS stooge" & "boot licker of upper caste." That's outrageous, given he was until recently a political prisoner, which he endured w/courage & moral clarity

Larry Summers strategizing w/Epstein abt a mentee he wanted to seduce: "to get her to be good probably requires more firmness than I enjoy."

Obama handed the reins of his administration over to this juvenile, virulent misogynist. He ran (and still has a job at) Harvard!

This year, I've been thinking a lot about how my mom's feminism and commitment to justice as an Amish-Mennonite woman allowed me to find a life and community beyond the Amish. She would have been 67 today. Happy birthday, Mom.

Charli collaborating with John Cale but for an Emerald Fennell soundtrack is quite an internet reputation heat check... can't say I'm sanguine that it's gonna go well.

People feeling far too comfortable posting overtly sexist things these days...
Not every idea is worth airing. Not every point of view is worth hearing. Not everything that "a lot of people believe" should be credentialed by homepage space. Would the NYT editorial board run "Did Homosexuals Ruin Culture?" or "Did Black People Get Too Big for Their Britches?" I guess we'll see.

I love this because perhaps no phrases in the English language are more in need of deflation & demystification than "The White House"/"The West Wing"/"The Oval Office" & what better way to do so than with this third-wedding-at-a-suburban-golf-course font.

Demobilizing OFA was probably the second biggest strategic mistake Obama made (after staffing up w/plutocratic Summers/Geithner types). This is good, tho remains to be seen if Zohran will actually ask his volunteers to directly exert pressure on hesitant Dem politicians to pass his agenda.
This is a big deal, the opposite of Obama standing down his organizing base after 2008.
Very exciting to see activists launching a new nonprofit today to keep building on the community of volunteers that came together to get Mamdani elected.

The candidate running non-stop anti-trans ads just got thoroughly embarrassed in the VA Gov race. Not the first time, won't be the last time. Again, public opinion is fluid & can be shaped by joint action. When lives are at risk, cowardice & silence is just as bad as malice.

Congrats to all the organizers who made this victory possible! Now, much more work ahead
Mamdani closing with ads in Arabic and ads about socialism is admirably unapologetic, given the racist, Islamophobic, and McCarthyist attacks he's been subjected to. And when he wins, it's gonna help blunt the effectiveness of those kinds of attacks in the future.
