Why do we persist in romanticizing failure, particularly where students are concerned? A look at the ideology behind this tendency - and how it's contradicted by research - in the latest episode of Kohn's Zone: "The Failure of Failure." (All episodes are available here: www.alfiekohn.org/podcasts/)

It wasn’t about the money
It’s ludicrous and insulting to suggest that the richest university in Australia can’t afford the two part-time wages to run Meanjin.
Also: did they even try to save it? Donation drive? Philanthropic efforts? Offering it to another institution?
No.
The university council shut it down intentionally.
Exclusive: Australia’s second-oldest literary journal, Meanjin, is being shut down today for "financial" reasons, Crikey can reveal.

A new episode of my podcast (Kohn's Zone) just dropped: "Confusing Harder with Better."
Why do corporate school reformers fetishize "rigor"? Why do we assume that AP classes are the best classes in a high school? Why have kindergartens come to resemble bad first-grades?

Authoritarians weaponize stupidity to undermine trust in expertise, institutions responsible for safeguarding and dispersing knowledge, and consensus reality, because doing so makes people more dependent on the authoritarian leader or party as the sole arbiters of “truth.”
