It may just be because I was reading/listening to a bunch of military revolution stuff this month, but this is both true and funny. Off to pitch my “how to build a competitive trace italienne” piece to Bloomberg
the funny thing about the "moat" metaphor is that as I understand it moats were only sort of meh as a defense mechanism, as in an extended siege you could just fill them in or dig under them or whatever, and mostly existed because they were (like an earthen berm) cheap to make
i think DeepSeek is straight-up lying about how they trained their models, although the performance is _very_ good. the thing is that there's just no moat and people have been saying this from the beginning. maybe people are becoming aware of this.
