Combredet et al. report a robust and fast gene-knockout method for the choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta, one of the closest relatives of animals. Inactivation of genes encoding homologs of components of the Hippo pathway reveals regulation of multicellular rosette size by quantity of secreted extracellular matrix.
