Here's how "Stranger Things," built out of vintage pop-culture references, captured the “If you liked that, you’ll like this” spirit of Netflix. "It’s a big Halloween bowl of retro candy that invites you to remember when, one sugary bite at a time," James Poniewozi writes.

Adiós a Peter Watkins, que desafió las formas, la política y la ética del cine tradicional y se adelantó a los debates contemporáneos en torno a la verdad y el poder de las imágenes. Le debemos muchísimo.

A local video store owner informed me that kids in their 20s are buying up all his VHS horror movies because they think it's "scarier due to the graininess of the video" and that was the most heart-warming thing I've heard in a long time.

A couple summers ago, I taught a JACKASS-themed Word West writing workshop. Every week, we'd chat about one of the movies for an hour, then workshop their stories. It was the best! For many reasons, "it feels like it can belong to anybody, that anybody can become a part of it" big among them.
New today on the site!

The Community issue continues, with @nataliesnotinit.bsky.social on love, laughter, connection, and community in the JACKASS franchise:

"One of JACKASS's perpetual charms is that it feels like it can belong to anybody, that anybody can become a part of it."

“The lightheartedness and irreverence of DUCK SOUP are not borne of indifference to the hardships of the time, but are instead weapons against troubled times, for both the Marxes and their audience.”

The Sopranos is probably the Rosetta Stone of modern American reaction: it consists of people who bemoan the loss of an imagined past they mainly got from movies, claim victimization based on identity but hate when others do it, and view the people who build the society they prey on as suckers.
