I love world-building but I hate consistency, I want a legendarium that is both rich and incomprehensible.

worldbuilding in litfic: the conveyance of the specifics of setting and character via descriptive detail
worldbuilding in sf (weak): the elaboration of a fictional world that exists to serve a narrative
worldbuilding in sf (strong): the creation of a secondary world that exists apart from narrative
as worldbuilding discourse continues on, i submit that perhaps you should consider that others might be using the word in a different way than you, and that no one is going to take away the things you like, that we are free to discuss the conceptual frameworks of fiction without consequence.

it warms my heart to see the rejection of 'worldbuilding' which is entirely antithetical to both the notion of 'weird' and 'fantasy,' itself.
the fantastic must be unknowable, irreconcilable, and irrational else it simply is nothing more than failed realism.
If i can get back on my bullshit, I think this is how the weird operates within fantasy, by emphasizing the subjectivity and unknowability of the imagined world, against the objectivism of fantasy that “worldbuilds” in a desperately positivist sense (which seems to me entirely wrongheaded)

BITTER MEDICINE worldbuilding: Some things will have to remain mysteries. It's okay not to know. Let go of what you don't know.

THE MEMORY HUNTERS worldbuilding: All that you know changes once you encounter people from different places and cultures. Discrepancies prove that truth is multifaceted.

The multiverse of infinite dimensions is a top tier premise, but I fear it’s becoming standard. We should also tell stories where there are exactly 5 universes and 3 of them are weird

A lot of classic sci-fi/fantasy is “The five realms are Earth, Hell, Worse Hell, The Living Pagoda, and ClockZone”

My gut feeling on "worldbuilding" is that it varies wildly by project, but the core of it is establishing enough internal logic that the reader doesn't feel that nothing matters because anything can happen.

Internal logic does not have to be the same as real world logic.
