I’m here to read books and pet cats, and I’m all outta — actually, no, I have plenty of both. Excellent.

I also make software and opine about everything. I only get paid for one of those, though (the first one — my employer has no stake in my opinions).
I don't know if these Christmas lights are actually better, but their website is stylish as hell tru-tone.com/

It does fail a WCAG accessibility scan pretty miserably, though, which is unfortunate (and most of the reported issues should be easy to fix)
The Best Vintage-Style LED Christmas Lights | Tru-Tone™ Light Bulbs

@profanity.accountant how’m I doing?

Delightful!
I made a tiny game for PicoSteveMo with @dicey.bsky.social !

➡️ It's called King Stephen
➡️ You play as King Stephen (King of England 1135-1154)
➡️ It's a Reigns-like decision-making game
➡️ I did the writing + portraits
➡️ Made for a Stephen King game jam
➡️ It's very silly

They’re on sale again, coincidentally sidedeal.com/deals/3-pack...

The silliest thing I bought in 2025 was a 3-pack of little puffer jackets for beverages (seen here modeled by a 12 ounce bottle of Gatorade

I love them so much

I follow a lot of writers, and, unsurprisingly, writers are some of the absolute best people to follow. With the ideas, and the expressing them well. Good stuff.

Plus, the writers I like recommend (or even just repost) the writers they like, and usually it turns out that I also like those writers

Trust me, to the extent it’s possible to use AI/ML technology to accelerate scientific discovery, scientists have already been doing it (and would have continued doing it where applicable)
November 25, 2025 at 5:47 AM
Ugggghhhh noooooo like for starters *no* existing AI tech is actually doing human-like reasoning — they are doing statistics — and second of all, AI as a field of endeavor isn’t even remotely new
compelled to break my "don't amplify nonsense" rule to say

WRONG
November 25, 2025 at 3:28 AM
I don’t know if anyone really knows how actual human brains do actual human reasoning, but all any computer is ever doing is math (computers are very good at math; it’s why we invented them).

You can make decent predictive models for some domains, but to date, you can’t make a thinking machine.

The black pepper in the mashed potatoes was supposed to be measured in *teaspoons* not *tablespoons*

I also made this same mistake years later when adding salt to a loaf of sourdough (albeit not for a holiday), which netted a bizarre, flattened loaf that tasted like the sea
yes, hello, I would like to place an order for everyone’s funniest stories of holiday food-related family grudges / drama / chaotic incidents / lore

I feel like we need this

These are very good books and people should buy and then read them!
Solomon's Seal in eBook and audio is in a big Kobo sale this week, and in price matching in my own shop I opted to discount everything available in the series.

I’m a pretty successful software engineer. I started out with a BA in English. It makes me sad that it’s either extremely difficult or impossible for people younger than me to do that — having studied stuff other than just programming does not make anyone a worse programmer.

Major sources of hate speech are located outside the US. Well yeah, we have this conversation every few months. And every few months people reject the bright shiny evidence that easiest way to ruin America is to feed the hate and bigotry that already exists here.

It uhhh also plays Minuet in G *incredibly loud* when it reaches the specified temperature
I've decided to make tea my entire personality this winter, so I bought a Zojirushi water boiler to keep hot water constantly to hand.

It has a timer function so you can set it up the night before, and when you set the timer, it plays a little lullaby — but *incredibly loud*

What am *I* doing online at this hour? Putting off going to bed because I have to wake up earlier than usual tomorrow, like a normal well-functioning adult, of course

Also there’s a cat on me

Oh no, she just left, so now I have to do the thing?
