I’ve made this point several times myself. My mother just turned 20 when the war ended and her town in East Germany was occupied by the Russians. She was repeatedly raped. Her town was rubble. The country in ruins.
Germans can attest that this is not in their own self-interest: The "party" lasted 12 years, many Germans lost their lives or homes, there was hunger and crisis after the end of the 3rd Reich, and we are still living with the guilt of having systematically murdered millions of fellow humans.
