Add to the reading list!
Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

IMO democracy becomes impossible in the absence of any social or political norms against lying.
Kristi Noem: "No American citizens have been arrested or detained. We focus on those who are here illegally. And anything you would hear or report that would be different than that is simply not true and false reporting."

Administration officials are calling peaceful protesters "antifa" and "paid." This is a classic authoritarian tactic: delegitimize dissent. The truth: we are millions of everyday Americans—your neighbors—standing up for democracy. Don't fall for the lies. #NoKings

News you can use.
NEW: It's kind of amazing how many stupid things people are saying about Antifa. (My favorites from this list are #8 and #9.)

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

If the federal government shuts down, will ICE stop ripping apart families on the street and at pre-scheduled court hearings?

It’s really all we should be talking about today.
There is no world in which it is normal for the president to publicly call upon his attorney general to hurry up and prosecute his political foes. It’s like the Watergate tapes but posted on social media. Let’s get a grip on what’s happening here.

So, I thought that this meant they were going to just fire all the statisticians. But now I think he means that tens or hundreds of thousands of people are quitting their jobs just to make the stats look bad. I'm not sure which is more insane.
Lutnick says the jobs numbers "will get better because you'll take out the people who are just trying to create noise against the president ... this is gonna be the greatest growth economy six months from now, a year from today"

She’s not wrong.
On the left, my warning from September 2024 about what Trump 2.0 would look like. On the right, recent headlines.

I wish I'd been wrong. But because Trump is following a classic authoritarian playbook, it’s up to state and local governments to push back on this tyranny while it’s still possible.

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
Release from HHS: HHS will wind down its development of the mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
