I didn’t know quite how bad the firings of senior female staff were in the U.S. military. Then I read this article. Informative. Chilling. Mordant.

So *go to the library now*.

This is not an answer to "I don't wanna pay for a periodical." It's the *solution* to not paying for a periodical.
No, but we would go to the library and read the periodicals on hand.

There are many quality outlets that provide free news. I grant that crap is always free, but you can be informed easily enough without spending money.
The subscriber-only paywall model drives so many casual readers away from real journalism and toward always-free right-wing nonsense.

I have paid subscriptions to 3-5 papers, but I will admit to sharing my logins with MAGA-leaning but curious family members. Converted a few.

Bitd, NYC newstand operators had an eagle eye on the wares. You could look at the newspaper - without touching it - long enough to glance the major headlines but that was it. If your hand touched in any way other than with intent to purchase, they were ON you.

So…in 2011 the Justice Department confessed error to the Supreme Court that it had misrepresented the factual basis underlying the rationale presented to the Court to justify Japanese internment. As in, that is the official position of the U.S. government. Are they going to retract that, too?
The regime has posted signs at Manzanar, the WWII concentration camp for Japanese Americans, asking visitors to report "negative" historical interpretations. Hard to imagine a positive interpretation but it's probably just an excuse to shut down the park.

Signs to police 'negative' history went up at Manzanar. Historians are nervous.

So, if I’m reading this right: They gutted the office that runs the government’s award-winning, in-house HR and staffing software, and now they’ve inked a sole-source, no-bid contract so that a private company on proprietary software can do what the office of civil servants did on in-house software
Workday gets contract from US agency behind DOGE's staff cuts without competitive tender
The federal HR agency at the heart of billionaire Trump advisor Elon Musk's efforts to slash the federal workforce says it has awarded a contract for a new cloud-based HR platform to Workday without seeking bids from rivals.
