Congratulations to @calebgayle.bsky.social for making, ya know, pretty much every best books list of 2025. So well deserved.
In August, @jennaschnuer.bsky.social spoke with Gayle for DEPTH PERCEPTION about reporting history through a journalistic lens, his deep connection to Oklahoma, and the pressure of telling untold stories.

I haven't been Blue Skying it much but checked in and there's loads of interesting stuff going on here. Figured I should throw a link to my interview with Mary Roach into the mix. Oh and subscribe to @longlead.com's Depth Perception. You'll be glad you did. (It's free!)
For this week's DEPTH PERCEPTION, @jennaschnuer.bsky.social spoke with Roach about her new book "Replaceable You: Adventures in Human Anatomy," dissecting the science of biology, why scientists shouldn’t shy away from explaining their work, and her love of footnotes.

Learn more.
In her new book "Replaceable You," Mary Roach removes the sci-fi from regenerative medicine
In service of getting it right for readers, Roach often goes back to the basics when interviewing scientists

Sept. 9 will be my 12 year anniversary of living in Alaska but...I won't be here for it. I'm moving back to the east coast. So excited. I will always love AK and will return time and again but I'm ready to live in New York again. (Pretty sure I'll listen to a lot of these podcasts along the way.)

If you live in New York and want a say in who the Democratic nominee is, you have to change your party registration to Democrat by Thursday (online) or Friday (in person). It’s a closed primary. Independents and unaffiliated can’t vote in June!

Research shows that gratitude has powerful mental- and physical-health benefits.

Yet it needs to be genuine to be effective. Forcing ourselves to be grateful is a form of toxic positivity.

Laura Helmuth's impact on Scientific American & science journalism is immeasurable. She demonstrated how a major legacy publication could be a moral one: rigorous reporting on the climate crisis & untangling how science is political, such as explaining why trans kids deserve gender-affirming care
I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief. I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching), but for now I’d like to share a very small sample of the work I’ve been so proud to support (thread)
