🌱 Time to turn the compost today. I'm always amazed at the different kinds of fungi that I often find there. Not sure of it's name, please let me if you know.
A piece of wet brown cardboard that was in a compost bin. The cardboard has a piece of white fungi that is fuzzy at the bottom and has two fingers or peaks.

Public Advisory: Hydro Monitoring Paddy’s Pond fire for potential power impacts in metro area August 11, 2025 Our teams are monitoring a new fire that has developed near Paddy’s Pond, which is directly in our transmission corridor. These transmission lines serve the greater St. John’s area and, at this time, there is a potential for smoke, fire and/or fire suppression efforts to impact these lines. In the unlikely scenario that multiple lines are impacted, this could result in a power outage to St. John’s and surrounding areas. We are working very closely with our Provincial Emergency Operating Centre to coordinate response and will keep you informed.

Excited for this. I hand pollinated the watermelon 🍉 around 3 weeks ago and it looks like it took. This is the first time I've had success with watermelon
A small round Early Canada Improved watermelon growing in a backyard greenhouse. There is a sharpie marker for scale that shows the watermelon to be about half as long as the marker.

🌱Wild blueberries and raspberries from my backyard. It's not the biggest harvest nor the largest berries, but probably the best I've ever tasted. The birds seem to think so too; the robins and juncos have been filling up on them the past few days.
A small bowl of freshly picked wild Newfoundland low bush blueberries and 10 raspberries. About just as many were claimed by the "pickers tax" and never made it to the bowl 😋

A highlight of the summer is watching my 6 year old niece and her Unicorns United teammates play their first match against an out of town team. There was various levels of ball skills, but all encouraged each other and displayed tremendous enthusiasm for the beautiful game.

🌱About 10 ys ago I planted 12 yellow and 12 red tulips. Dig up and divide every couple ys. They have grown remarkably. Noticed some new yellow ones have red stripes. Guessing x pollination. This yr a red tulip with one petal that is half yellow. Thinking genetic mutation. @toddboland.bsky.social
A bed of yellow and red tulips that are just about ready to bloom. In the foreground is an old fashioned bleeding heart. Am opened yellow tulip that looks like it has red stripes painted down the edges of the petals. I think this is a result of cross-pollination with the nearby red tulips. A Darwin tulip that is almost ready to open. It is mostly red and has one petal that is exactly half yellow. Perhaps this a genetic mutation?
