this i assume is due to the strong influence of german medical science in japan at the time. iirc this also lead to delays of fixing scurvy in the japanese navy even after the british already found solutions, since german scientists had a different opinion.

crazy specs on this drone: battery with 16kw peak power, requiring water-cooling for electronics; so fast that if it passes too close to the controller doppler effect causes connection loss and crash
585 km/h (363 mph) drone speed record.

Incredible to think about how advances in 3D printing, batteries, motors, cameras, computational fluid dynamics, and VR displays come together to produce this achievement.

while researching personalized mRNA cancer vaccines, researchers discovered that the non-specific immune effects of mRNA vaccines are strong enough that they don't need to target cancers to benefit cancer therapy

What's worse, humans also probably perform addition via similarly cursed mechanisms.

I don't know exactly what's going on in my head when I do addition, but until I get to a number big enough where i have to crack out pen and paper, I'm pretty sure it's some bizarro vibe calc like this.

enhanced rock weathering via calcium solution mining could get as cheap as $20 per ton of co2:

"The costs for solution mining calcium might be <$20/ton CO2 under the most optimistic scenarios with a fraction of the surface disturbance."

How cheap can it pull CO2 from the air? Thanks to Nina, Jenny, Fridrik, Nan, Dan, Judy, and Frauke for their help and teaching on this subject. Any mistakes are my own.

china mars sample return is what NASA's MSR should have been. but its arguably unnecessarily complex mission led to slipping timelines & ballooning budgets, while introducing additional technical risks. it's been in danger of getting cancelled for a while. slim chance current admin be will helpful.
Tianwen-3 update: China's Mars sample return mission will launch in late 2028 and seek to return at least 500 grams of samples. Mission will also strictly adhere to planetary protection protocols. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

wouldn't call it a disaster yet but the combination of worsening response rates to surveys and an admin that blindly cuts budgets and isn't big on data in any way will pave the way for a real one down the road. the spending needed to improve data collection methods won't materialize anytime soon.
America’s data disaster is here!

"members of the groupchat noticed notifications going off and asked: "do you have a 'hot take' in your drafts?" obliquely referring to the discussion they were having moments earlier. "not anymore" replied [...]"
Captain Richard Meyer glanced out his cockpit window and saw black smoke rising from the desert. Controllers at Kirtland Air Force Base saw it too and radioed, “Do you have ‘hot cargo’ aboard?,” obliquely referring to the massive weapon it was carrying moments earlier. “Not anymore,” replied Meyer.

"Numerous dead insects were inside the tubing used to transfer the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), [redacted], from storage drums to [redacted] tanks, as well as a [redacted] used for storing API transfer hoses and [redacted]."

can't really use the "extra protein" joke for API sadly

surely that gas bottle is for supplying nitrogen-free breathing air for maximum knurdness (westhunt.wordpress.com/2012/03/23/a...). the only downside is an aesthetic on the level of the golden EVA suit from the 2007 movie sunshine. or a plus if you want to be left alone...

first H-bomb airdrop test result: targeting is harder than you'd think
Today in 1956 at Bikini Atoll, the US held its first H-bomb airdrop test. A crew member aboard the B-52 bomber mistook an observation facility on one island for the target on Namu Island, causing the experimental 3.8-Mt device to explode ~3.8 miles off target and the loss of nearly all effects data.
