I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Thanks to my students for a great day yesterday as we wound down a truly exhausting semester - one class guessed my age as 5 yrs younger than what I am (!), another said they appreciated my “work ethic” With our profession under attack it has been harder to gauge what’s going well.
