I may (or may not) have been waiting years for an excuse to use the word "gloaming." #SffChat

I imagine that time keeping in remote or rural areas is only as precise as necessary -- rising with the dawn, coming home with the tide, etc.. In cities and castles, there would probably be more precise communal clocks based on either magical or physical mechanisms. #SffChat
#SFFChat Q3: How is time kept or measured in your world? If time is the same way as for us, how does magic or technology influence it?
November 13, 2025 at 11:56 PM
I usually have a pretty clear idea of the time of day a scene occurs, though it doesn't always make it into the written description. But, oh man, do I love narrating dramatic stuff happening by moonlight. I sometimes have to edit out a glut of moonlight-related descriptions. #SffChat
#SFFChat Q2: When you write, do you tend to have a clear picture of the time of day for particularly intense scenes?
November 13, 2025 at 11:49 PM
Glancingly referenced in Out of Dark Waters: Night time is always high tide, because the moon orbits Thindul directly opposite the sun, and the moon pulls the ocean. (Not because of gravity, of course; the same eldritch god created the ocean and the moon, and the moon calls the ocean home.) #SffChat
#SFFChat Q1: What unique features of day, night, or time exist in your world? OR, how do people in your world think about these concepts (maybe they're sacred, etc)?

An experimental set up for better terrain pics. I think I'm getting there.

My last few interceptors have their heads now! I clipped the spikes off of some HH MKIII helmets. I'm on a quest to give each of the 4 squad variants a visually distinctive build.

I need to find a better way to take pictures of large terrain pieces. But in the meantime...

BEHOLD yon eerie ruin, where it crests the desolate vista of my Förhöja kitchen cart.

Aspirationally, I'd like readers to carry away a vivid memory of how my work made them feel, long after their specific memory the story has faded. The way that I feel about the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, or Ocarina of Time. #SffChat
#SFFChat Q3: What aspects of your work would you most like to stick with readers?

This was poorly phrased! Sort of, "what would you most like readers to take away" but in a less immediate sense.

My current WIP, Oath and Memory, is about an alien(ish) being who came through a portal into a high fantasy realm, along with many others of his species, with no memory of their past. He is on a quest to liberate the (supposed) key to his memories from a dragon's hoard. #SffChat
#SFFChat Q1: What roles do myth, history, memory, or remembrance/commemoration play in your work?

Writing fantasy is trying to figure out what to call a French braid when there is no France.
Writing about fantasy cephalopods is typing “She winked” and having to look up whether octopi can wink (they can)
Being a fantasy writer is typing "they extended an olive branch" and then going "shit, do they even have olives in this world?"

This kitbash is a combination of Frostgrave Wizards and Stargrave Automatons from @northstarfigs.bsky.social, with a Sicarian Infiltrator head from Warhammer 40K.
