June 19, 1775: Vardry McBee, a farmer, merchant and railroad promoter who became known as the “Father of Greenville” for buying the land and developing the industry of that South Carolina city, is born in Spartanburg, S.C. Although a slave owner he opposed South Carolina secession in 1860.
