A smorgasbord of a column, with political notes, cultural notes, etc. For example: What would you like to know about that you have not yet roused yourself to study? I confess to birds, trees, flowers, stars -- and classics (as in Ovid). www.jaynordlinger.com/p/visions-in...

In its National Security Strategy, the Trump administration refers to "patriotic European parties," whose "growing influence" is cause for "great optimism." What are those parties? For one thing, they tend to like Putin. Here is a column from me. www.thenextmove.org/p/patriots-p...

Peace is a big, slippery subject. (I once wrote a book called "Peace, They Say.") The Kremlin has a certain view of peace, or "peace." So does Donald Trump. Those views are dovetailing, as James Kirchick meticulously and chillingly demonstrates. www.politico.com/news/magazin...

All my life, I've heard, "It's never been harder to be young." That is a platitude, not necessarily true (like "The world has never been more complicated"). But when I read things like this, I think: nightmare. apnews.com/article/scho...

Note he says "all of their money." Demagogue. Also, why doesn't he say "off to Israel"? Or another country we support, especially if it is embattled? Why is Ukraine the object of sneers? And don't kid yourself: it could be Israel next, as it already is with some. Many.

I wrote a book called "Peace, They Say." Our envoy to Russia says, "Russia remains fully committed to achieving peace in Ukraine." What Putin is committed to is the destruction and subjugation of Ukraine. Is that peace? If our envoy is not a stooge, he is dangerously naive.

For your consideration: After 1945, fascism -- which had been very popular -- was discredited. For decades, fascism was in bad odor. But now the odor, the stigma, is wearing off. Why shouldn't fascism be popular again? It was before, in many countries. Anyway, a thought, a "night thought."
