Unrelated to today's posts, still sad—but the song's a bit lighter.

It's also been ten years since Allen Toussaint passed. King of New Orleans.

Put on some Labelle. Put on some Meters. Put on whatever you please, but listen to this first. Thankful for good music and life.

Fun fact: Edmund Fitzgerald was a founding partner of the Milwaukee Brewers. The freighter as named for his father.

A minor throwback to Mt St Helens over Coldwater Lake as the sun was coming up. Warm light, cold water, angsty mountain.

If you ever have the opportunity, the ceremony at Split Rock Lighthouse is with going to. It's incredibly moving and a beautiful place. After learning about this in 5th grade in Michigan in 93, always wanted to go. This is from November 2015. (1/2)

I've been a bit quiet the last two weeks. Caught the classic early autumn community cold, and, well, a break's not so bad now and again.

But today's thread's about something you're probably already aware of—it's the 50th anniversary of the loss of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior.

There is an increasing amount of historic AI slop that's out there—especially on Facebook, no surprise.

It might be the same, it might not be—but how's about an early 80s text-based Mount St. Helens game?

Loads of fun for the whole family, just like the Cinco MIDI Organizer.

Bumping for #NationalCatDay.

We love her very much—as well as her cantankerous, opinionated older sister, who is Dorothy Zbornak reincarnated as a nubbed tail tortie.

Alrighty, my PNW friends.

Let's help my guy out with some advice.
@mountsthelens1980.bsky.social I’m looking at a PNW trip to see our big horseshoe shaped friend😅. Assessing the pros and cons of staying in Seattle vs Portland - particuarly with 2 daughters and a wife in tow, and finding things for them to do while i’m getting my volc on. Portland vs Seatlle 🤔

Earlier this year, the U.S. Geological Survey shared this previously unseen photo of Mount St. Helens from the then-brand-new Coldwater II observation post.

It would only last another 16 days.

Another photo with USGS geologist Don Swanson (legend, icon), this time with a toppled survey tower partially buried by a pyroclastic flow sometime during the Oct. 16-18 eruption.

Oh, and it was moved nearly a thousand feet downslope, too.

These are 2 of the photos I took from a Cessna 150 just a couple weeks before this broadcast, late April 1985. One shows the dome as we flew in, the other is the crater wall as we flew around the inside. Not an experience I'll soon forget.

The USGS Library is a great resource that is clumsy to use and has a variety of errors. I'm putting it all here. This is currently sorted by filename, which is mostly grouped by photographer in the US...

Later, Swanson joined KGW’s Kathy Smith live from inside the crater.
Behind them, steam rose from the dome for the first time since the previous fall.

“The dome isn’t dead yet,” he said.

Five years after the eruption, Mount St. Helens had become a laboratory. USGS scientists practically lived in the crater, tracking the dome’s growth, measuring gas, tilt, and cracks.

"It’s been a very cooperative lab,” said geologist Don Swanson.
