Don't forget the Ape Caves in Cougar, Washington, a 1.2-mile-long lava tube located in the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument that was formed over 2,000 years ago, and is the third longest lava tube in North America.

Also, it's official. Spread the word.

Portland, Oregon, is Stargell Country. We are Fam-a-lee.

Pirate stars such as RF Dave "Cobra" Parker, LF Omar Moreno, and SS Tim Foli quickly rotated out, but "Pops"—Wilver Dornell Stargell from Alameda, California—stayed in three.

They'll be across the bay at Candlestick tomorrow, facing the Giants and old Bucco Rennie Stennett.

Pirates won 4-1, btw.

Ah, the stories alone.

I watched a video of him setting up Southern Nights, and you can see why his arrangement was the way it was.

AH!

Each video I've seen of him performing is...well, what can you say? Charming, thoughtful, genius.

Most indeed.

Wish we could take credit, but Canada is the land that gave us Gordon Lightfoot—even if the story is (mostly) American.

Thanks again for this and many other things, Great White North.

Saturday Night Live premiered less than one month before, and Elton John held the #1 song on the Billboard Top 100.

Yet it feels like an event from a much more distant past.

If you ever have the opportunity, the ceremony at Split Rock Lighthouse is with going to. It's incredibly moving and a beautiful place. After learning about this in 5th grade in Michigan in 93, always wanted to go. This is from November 2015. (1/2)

This NatGeo documentary of the Ballard explorations was one I had on tape back then with, of all people, Martin Sheen narrating.

Unbelievably good.

Disasters, as you can gather, sit with me in a way other events do not.

There's a fascination, of course, but there's a deeper well of feelings and emotion that goes along with it—the same you saw with St. Helens applies here, too.

To the 29. To the wives, sons, and daughters. To Gord.

Ten months before he passed in 2023, I got to see Gordon Lightfoot perform in Richmond, Virginia.

Postponed a handful of times over a few years, I was glad to see the man behind this and many other masterful songs perform live.

Yet, nothing carried the weight more than the tribute to the Fitz.

Just so happened to be that around that lesson, this particular documentary reran on Discovery or History 1.0 (pre-Ancient Aliens).

It's when I first heard Lightfoot's song and all the details of the ship, its crew, and that final, harrowing journey through hell.

Still a great watch.

Dial it back about 25 years+ to a dismal year, 6th grade, split between three teachers—teenage angst in sight.

One spot in that year stuck out, though. My social studies teacher, when discussing the Great Lakes, taught us about the loss of the Big Fitz.

She lived nearby and remembered it clearly.
