My grandmother, Martha McDonald, died this morning. She was 93. She spent a good deal of her adult life sharecropping tobacco in NC. A widow by 30, my grandmother raised 12 children on her own, wearing bags on her feet so all her kids could have shoes.
She was an American hero. I love her dearly.🖤
