Why do people resort to the brutal measure of killing their own daughters, sisters, or cousins when they feel their family honour is tarnished? @aksoyundan.bsky.social and @aronszekely.bsky.social offer novel insights based on game theory and data on honour killings & honour norms.
📢 My paper w Aron Szekely on honour-based violence is published online (Open Access): journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10....

We explain this puzzling phenomenon applying game-theory and testing it using large-scale data on norms and actual femicides.

In 1963, Bernard Cohen wrote the press may not tell people what to think, but it does tell them what to think *about*.

Similarly, in 1960s protests and media made civil rights salient.

All to say, politicians may struggle to shape mass opinion, but they can influence which issues are salient.

At the risk of getting lost in words, a humble thread.

Willful autonomy and centralized authority are in apparent contraposition among three distinct branches of government and fifty individual self-governing entities as well as millions of individuals with agency.
