Lenny has a big appetite! When a Keeper called his name without offering treats, disappointed Lenny turned around and pushed the Keeper backwards with his bottom before marching off in a huff. This social, bold wild-born calf has inherited his mum Lima Lima's personality perfectly.

When elephants leave protected areas searching for food, conflict with communities can turn dangerous. Our teams shepherd them back to safety by ground and air. In 2024 our Aerial Unit helped over 400 elephants find safe passage home, including a herd of 50 and a family stuck on community land.

During today's earthquake at the San Diego Zoo, the elephants showed amazing intelligence and composure and formed an "alert circle" to shield their calves.
We had a fire drill and one of the maintenance guys dropped a cigarette and set the botanical garden on fire.
