Daba means "behind" in Somali. When we found him, utterly alone, his herd never came.

Now he's at the Nursery with Muridjo – our gentle mini-matriarch – firmly under her wing.

The little boy left behind will never be alone again.

We set out to rescue an orphan – and ended up saving a bull too.

Our pilot spotted baby Arthi alone in the bush. Flying to rescue him, he spotted a second elephant: an adult with a snare cutting deep into his foot.

Two lives saved in one day.

Kihari arrived in 2011, a poaching orphan so weak she could barely stand. Now she's a wild mother – and little Kiki has inherited her spirited personality.

Spot Kihari in a crowd? She's the one with one tusk – and one very mischievous shadow.

Three against one might seem unfair. Zigi, Lenny, and Sulwe often gang up, leaving Mwana outnumbered.
But she’s Umani’s first grandbaby, with devoted nannies and one famously protective mother. A little cousin mischief? She handles it with grace.

Kaikai woke up with a spring in her step – she was off to spend the day with her big friends.

Mwinzi flopped on the ground, trying to get her to play. Korbessa? Jealous. She kept trying to lure Kaikai away to form a ‘girls only’ club.

2025 was a year in which our pilots flew 347,000+ km for conservation, veterinary units conducted 600+ field treatments, and rangers covered 475,000+ km on patrols. We secured habitats, supported communities, and proudly worked with the Kenya Wildlife Service to further conservation across Kenya.

We’ve welcomed a quintet of tiny trunks into the world since the start of December – and little Kiki is one of them.

Her mother, Kihari, was rescued as an orphan of poaching in 2011. Now she’s raising the next wild generation. Each wild-born baby is a victory for conservation.

When Kerrio and Olomunyak wandered off, Mzinga knew exactly where to go – straight to her best friend Nyambeni.

What did they do? Found a patch of dusty soil and rubbed their faces in it together. No words needed.

Korbessa never met a guinea fowl she didn't want to chase. A throwback to her neonate days – ears flared, trunk raised, charging with wholehearted determination.

May we all carry such enthusiasm into 2026.

Happy New Year from all of us at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Snug as a bug in a rug – but Kaikai's story could have ended very differently.

Thank you for making moments like this possible. By adopting, donating, following, and spreading the word, you help us give orphans a safe place to call home.

Happy New Year! See you in 2026.

Shy at first glance, mischievous at heart – Daba is the adorable young bull who joined our orphan herd just this September. Over the coming days, we'll share the story of how he came to us, but we already know one thing: you're going to fall head over heels for him, just as we have: swt.bio/daba

Kipekee joined our Nairobi Nursery this year and became the most loved elephant in Kenya. Not a moment goes by when she isn’t surrounded by adoring trunks, offering touches and reassurance.

Our thanks to all our adopters who enable us to give Kipekee - and all the orphans - the love of a family.

Not every orphan can walk the vast distances of Tsavo. Some carry injuries that never fully heal.
That’s why Umani Springs exists. Sonje arrived in 2012 with a shattered knee. Today, she’s a matriarch, a mother, and proof that a different kind of life is still a full one.

As a newborn, Lemeki was swept away in flood waters. Seven years on, the girl who once demanded all the attention is now giving it to those who need it most – trunk hugging babies, standing guard, shielding the little ones from bullies.

Twiggy update! Almost four years after we rescued this orphan giraffe – found trying to pass herself off as a zebra – she's found a boyfriend and rejoined the wild.

Like proud parents, we couldn't be happier.

The wiggly thing on his face? Nsimba is still working it out. It flops. It swings. Sometimes it cooperates. Mostly it doesn't.

His mum Naipoki fell into a well twice as an infant. We raised her – and now she's brought her baby to meet us.

Rescued at just one week old after her mother died in the Mara, our pint-sized princess Kaikai has been running the show ever since.

Try to lead her somewhere she doesn't want to go? She'll do an about-turn and take everyone in a new direction.

Adopt our pint-sized princess.

Every new life is special. But Zigi is more special than most.

His mother Zongoloni was just 19 months old when poachers killed her mum. She stayed by her side, protecting her as best she could.

Zigi's birth is one of our milestone moments of 2025. Catch up here: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.o...

Something happens to rhinos around the one-year mark. Tiny squeaking creatures become majestic little dinosaurs – a glimpse of the multi-ton giants they'll become.

A very good girl joined our Canine Unit this year. Bela arrived in Tsavo brimming with enthusiasm – and an extraordinary talent for tracking.

One of hundreds of dogs "interviewed" for the role, she stood head and tail above the rest.

The orphans in our care have forged their own families, finding strength in one another. As deeply tactile creatures, they seek comfort in closeness – a trunk draped gently over a friend's back, simply being together. Family, after all, is who shows up for you.

Thank you for showing up for them.

Baby Sulwe is one of our grandcalves, born in 2024 to ex-orphan Sonje. Since her birth, we've met a further 18 wild-born babies, who were all born in 2025. Meet 18 reasons that gave us hope this year: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o...

Forget searching under the tree - the orphaned elephants know the best Christmas surprises are hidden in Keeper pockets! Snacks, cuddles, and the promise of a second chance. Merry Christmas from our herd to yours.

A day in the life of an infant orphan elephant is filled with milk bottles, cuddles, mudbaths and games. Why? Because decades of raising elephants has revealed an orphan's psychological health is as important as their physical needs.

Elephants go through six sets of teeth in a lifetime. One-year-old Lenny is putting his first set to good use – stripping branches, testing what that growing can do.

He wouldn't be here without you. We rescued his mum, Lima Lima, as an orphan.
