Lib Dems win the only UK by-election yesterday

Bearsden South in Scotland under multi-stage alternative vote system

INTERESTING: The Labour vote dropped out on stage 4 mostly transferring to Lib Dem not Greens

I've maintained for a long while that the Starmer project was fundamentally about trying to turn Labour into a centrist-to-centre-right monolith straddling the middle of British politics, in the mould of Macron.

And it's working out just as badly as it has for Macron.
The point of this project - loudly blared by McSweeney at anyone who would listen - was to establish Labour as the natural party of government by winning the approval of cranky reactionaries and racists. A project that was visibly fucked and broken on election day, and has only got more slapstick.

Has Rachel Reeves forgotten the role people who went to university play in society? Doctors, lawyers, lecturers, politicians LIKE HER, who went to Oxford and LSE!
Rachel Reeves: "It is not right that people who don't go to university bear the cost for others to." I don't use local leisure centres and I don't drive, so will I be made exempt for taxation that pays for all that stuff? Or is it only education we'll be going after

The targeting of Fed Chair Jerome Powell is our warning. The Fed must stay independent not because it's perfect, but because once monetary policy becomes political, economic stability collapses.

Check out one of my recent Substack articles, along with a video, at the link in my reply.

Nigel Farage wants every police officer in the UK to carry a gun.

Don't let him turn Britain into his version of Trump's America.

The answer is to ensure that these kids get a good education and their parents can find well-paying jobs.

Welfare reform should not be about pushing people into immediate poverty, it should be about supporting people back into work.

Scottish Tories to reintroduce two child benefit cap for low income families
Party leader Russell Findlay said the SNP Government's flagship Scottish child payment should only be given to the first two children in a family.

The nasty party is well and truly back.

Russell Findlay might be happy leaning into the role of the moustache twirling villain but the bottom line is that this policy will push children in many communities into poverty and it must be condemned.

Margaret MacGill has been stuck in hospital for more than 400 days, because the carers she needs just aren’t available.

It's now cost the NHS nearly £200,000 to keep her in hospital, when she doesn’t need or want to be there.

You cannot fix the NHS without fixing social care.

Over 1,000 illegal waste dumping sites discovered last year. Only half have been cleaned up.

This is a national crime. We must crack down on these organised criminals and clean up our communities.

Grateful to have had work published across these outlets. Writing is how I think through democracy, institutions, and what reform looks like when it’s meant to help people, not just sound good.

Permanent mobilisation can feel #radical.

#Democracy, in practice, is harder.

I’ve written about why #movements without a viable endpoint often fail to deliver change, and how that corrodes #democratic trust.

📖 Why I’m uneasy with permanent mobilisation and what it does to democratic trust.

My new piece, Radical stability and the work of reform, argues that Britain’s problem is not a lack of ideas, but weakened institutions and eroded trust, and that reform only lasts when it is built on competence, restraint, and democratic credibility.

Brief Guide To UK Politics:

Labour: a centrist party trying to appeal to the right that magically becomes left-wing at election time

Tories: a right-wing party that would’ve solved everything if only it wasn’t in government at the time

Reform: The Tories guest starring a paedophile’s friend

*Not so fun fact. Matt Goodwin was my dissertation supervisor.

Only briefly mind. I swapped after he said that my idea - a study and survey on the politics of the homeless (less than 1% vote) - was of "no academic interest".

BREAKING: Reform UK have announced GB News host and far-right commentator Matt Goodwin as their candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election

It really is disappointing to see how the man who provided us with a scathing critique of Reform's politics is now willing to sell-out his own principles to stand for them.

There is great irony that the man Reform have selected to win Gorton and Denton for them is the same man (in his previous life as a serious academic) who co-wrote a superb book called National Populism that dissects the very same ideas he now promotes.
