From hottest to coldest within a span of a month. Month-end June vs month-end July. Wyld swing across Europe. Certainly both extreme events in its own right. Happy autumn everyone in western Europe 🥶 Brace for more heat especially in Türkiye 🔥

Scientists have known for decades that soaring atmospheric CO2 emissions are causing changes in ocean chemistry, threatening marine life & ecosystems.

In June 2025, a study found that ocean acidification has now passed a safe threshold across large swathes of the world’s marine environment.
As ocean acidification ramps up, experts call for speedy ocean protection
Ocean health is moving into a danger zone, with rampant human-caused carbon dioxide emissions having already pushed ocean acidification levels beyond safe limits in large swaths of the marine…

The always great @drkatemarvel.bsky.social is in the Washington Post today, talking about her fantastic new book.

When lead author Van Westen talks about "a more unstable [AMOC] regime which corresponds to actual observations", he means studies like this. These measurements indicate a bistable #AMOC regime unlike in many models, i.e. closer to the tipping point.

We don’t know how close we are to triggering an Atlantic Ocean circulation #AMOC breakdown - but now we know a lot more about what it would mean for extreme temperatures in Europe. Good @carbonbrief.org piece on a new study just out by the Dutch colleagues! 🌊

Ocean current ‘collapse’ could trigger ‘profound cooling’ in northern Europe – even with global warming - Carbon Brief
A “collapse” of key Atlantic ocean currents would cause winter temperatures to plunge across northern Europe, overriding the warming driven by human activity.

🚨 Carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels set a new monthly *record high* in May 2025 - 430.51 ppm (seasonal maximum)

This is the second largest May-May increase in this dataset (3.6 ppm higher than 2024). This is not good... 🫣

This is phenomenal.

Sea surface temperatures are >5C above average to the west of the UK and around Iceland. It's the strongest area of anomalous warmth on the planet at the moment.

It's the warmest in recorded history for northwest Europe.

Much of Europe will probably see a summer wave starting soon, with both XFG and NB.1.8.1 growing at similar rates, and the combination is already probably in the 30% prevalence range.

No, global temperatures are not "rising faster than climate models seem able to explain".

They are rising EXACTLY as fast as climate model predicted.

AND THAT'S BAD ENOUGH!

Land is both a source of emissions (via deforestation, forest harvest, and non-CO2 emissions not shown here like those from agriculture) and a carbon sink (eg from forest growth and regrowth, plants, soils).

The overall picture, of course, is increasing emissions, atmospheric CO2, and temperature.

Our planet is heading for a second year in a row above the 1.5°C "safe" climate goal. we must call this crisis what it is - a crime. It is a crime against humanity, and still today, our governments lay out the red carpets for these criminals to grow richer and richer as they steal our future.
