I know so many great people who are doing so much. If you are isolated from people who are trying their best, I can understand feeling like no one's doing anything, but really, you just need to find the people who are trying and try with them — or maybe encourage some new folks to try alongside you.

The U.S. will become more fascist if we don't dismantle the controlled opposition party. You cannot oppose fascism if the space in which you can do it legally is occupied by a party that doesn't want to oppose it. Then your only hope is the Luigi Mangiones, but the U.S. doesn't have enough of those

If you have ever thought that my journalism or my first book were net positives for the world, understand that they probably would not exist if I did not have a spouse who paid the mortgage. If I'd been a solo earner/parent, I likely would have left criticism, journalism or book writing long ago.
And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.
The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.

One would think that enslavement would OBVIOUSLY not be permissible in a healthy society, but this country is not & has never been by any means healthy. That an amendment was required to make slavery kinda illegal 90 years after its founding shows the moral bankruptcy of this country's foundation.
