The device buzzed once, then a voice answered—deep, gravel-rough, and unmistakably ancient. “Yes?” came Rafael’s response, calm and terse as always. “Get the gang ready,” Duvac said without preamble. “We might have to move the castle. Security breach—Grade A.” He didn’t wait for confirmation. He already knew the Gargoyle would act the moment the line went dead. Duvac turned back to Margaret, his jaw set like stone. “Take care of him,” he said, jerking his chin toward Judah. “And get Nina. I want every person we rescued and every human we captured checked for embedded tech—anything that could compromise us.” Margaret nodded sharply. “I’ve got it. Go.”

Yet Nygel loved the place. Well, not so much ‘loved’ as didn’t hate. Well, that was debatable too, but it allowed him in, which went a long way to being considered his local. People tended to leave him alone here, which he appreciated far more than the attention he usually got, which was often insulting and casually violent. People didn’t like Nygel. He bothered them. Not Lally, though. Lally didn’t just let him hang around. Lally actively looked out for him. Protected him, sometimes. Covered up all of Nygel’s many mistakes.

By sheer coinkidink, I happen to have used today’s #vss365 prompt word in ‘Reign, Dear’. 😅
Then he saw perhaps the only person that he could rely on to be sensible. There, still examining the remains of Old Man Hobble’s house, stood Goody Tallheart. Ignoring the protests from the villager that had little chance of having a single Big Coin, let alone a million, Boulder rushed to the witch’s side. She had a book in her hand and Boulder almost turned to run the other way, but he had to show bravery in the face of literature.

“Forgive my interruption, sir, but I fear the evening closes in and I believe another snow shower approaches.” He had a big overcoat folded over his arm and then began wrapping it around Boulder’s shoulders. “I have taken the liberty, sir, of soliciting the service of a small cart to return us to the palace. I have a sandwich, for the return journey, and a flask of brandy, should the chill grow too frigid. After you, sir.” Boulder didn’t have the strength to fight against it. He sloped back toward where the villagers had continued to organise the search for Old Man Hobble, now that the distraction of the ‘Queen’ had gone. Good people. Proud people, who didn’t deserve to have royalty making them feel like they were lesser because of their place in society. Not even fake royalty. It was getting dark, and cold, and he accepted the brandy. He needed a drink. T’was the eleventh night of Festivus, and all through the village nothing stirred that night. Except for a large amount of people with butterfly nets. A wish was a wish, after all.

“Do continue, Mister Rimsitter.” Bolsivver shook his head at Grumf as the dwarf wiggled his, or her, hirsute eyebrows at Delkin’s knees. There really did seem to be a lot of raucous noise in the next room, causing Bolsivver to frown. “Grumf, go see what that noise is about. Mister Rimsitter, if you please.” Rimsitter took a deep, long drag of his cigarette, hissing through his teeth as he leaned over again, supporting himself on his knees. That patience of Bolsivver’s, cultivated after many, many long years of dealing with the most intelligence deprived unwashed of the city, had started to not only fray at the edges, but had actively started shedding a great deal of strands through the stress of not being able to cope with a mage who had, apparently, made procrastination something of an art form. Grumf had left, meaning that if Delkin annoyed Bolsivver any more he would have to soil hus hands with the blood of another man and the last lot of blood still hadn’t washed out of the cuffs of his favourite shirt.

Eye contact is deadly in this game, but I can’t resist peeking, and, true to form, there’s the crooked smile. The dimple too. “Dare.” My heart thumps inexplicably when [REDACTED]’s eyes flash to mine, so quickly that I convince myself I imagined it. The light in this ice cave plays tricks. “I dare you…” Elio begins, then after an appropriately dramatic pause, “to go for a swim in that hot spring. Naked.” There are whistles and cat-calls, and a very loosened-up Brooke shouts, “Woo! Take it off!” But [REDACTED]’s smirk doesn’t waver. Elio’s smile stretches ear to ear as he bounces his legs up and down in excitement. “Little do you know,” [REDACTED] says, standing, “undress is my preferred state of being.” He pulls his shirt up over his head and tosses it. It lands on Elio’s face, much to his delight. Don’t look, my brain commands. But my mutinous eyes skim the indentations of his hip bones, just above the waistband of his jeans, and up the defined lines of his stomach as he brushes by. I blame the party punch entirely.

“I know, Sabbat.” “-th’fuck’s she got your shirt for?” “Because someone stabbed her,” Archer said, leaning forward to place his tea glass back under the spigot of the samovar. “And, unlike in Old Town, people walking around covered in blood in this particular district tend to attract a certain amount of unwanted attention.” He twisted the tap, savouring the sudden cloud of fragrant steam as the boiling water hit the dark layer of concentrated tea in the bottom of the glass. “Given the fact that her shirt was utterly ruined, lending her one of mine seemed like the logical choice.” Sabbat scowled, obviously unconvinced by the argument (though for the life of him Archer couldn’t figure out why). Finally, he said, slowly: “So you gave her your shirt.” “…That is in fact what I just said, yes.” “Fuckin’ chivalrous of you,” the assassin commented, venomously. Archer rolled his eye, taking a spoonful of jam from the open jar on the table and stirring it into his freshly-poured glass of tea. “I could hardly let her walk around half-naked, Sabbat. And besides, I don’t see why it’s anything to do with you. It’s my shirt.” “An’ you’re givin’ it t’some werewolf bitch who fuckin’ jumped me – after she *broke into your sixdamn house*,” Sabbat snarled. He took a swig of his own tea, slamming the glass down hard enough on the table to make Archer jump slightly. “Y’don’t see why that might – just might – be a fuckin’ *problem*, Archer?”

He smiled and stretched leisurely, bed covers falling away; all sleepiness gone, he felt alive! He leapt out of bed and scooted across the floor hopping from foot to foot. “My Lord, that is cold.” Rifling through the small possessions drawer he quickly wrangled some socks on to his size tens, felt the warm relief instantly. No time to dally. A few stretches, a hatful of sit ups, some pull ups on the protruding pipe and some slow press ups until his arms shook with the effort. He checked the dressing on his forearm, amazed at the lack of pain, it stayed resolutely stuck in place. The pang in his belly told him it was time for breakfast. He rolled up the shirt sleeve for the dressing and put on actual trousers. No need for overalls! The three hours until he was on shift meant three hours of Ben time. The cavernous warehouse could wait. He picked a clean white towel from the back of the door and left the bunk, moving softly through quiet corridors, the dim yellow glow of night cycle illumination felt like the first glow of sunrise. Somewhere in amongst the slow gurgle of the pipe work, he heard a squeaking. Even aboard ship, there was life, untamed by humans

The water was already cooling by the time he rinsed the last of the suds from his hair. Eventually, he shut off the water with a reluctant twist and stepped out into the bathroom, dragging a towel from the nearby rack. Margaret had left him a change of clothes. Simple things—but to Judah, they may as well have been robes sewn from silk. A long-sleeved shirt, slightly too big, but sleeves riding short on his forearms. Sweatpants tied at the waist, still baggy around his thin hips. He looked like a scarecrow in hand-me-downs, but he didn’t care. It wasn’t white. And the best fucking part? Socks and shoes.

It is now five, and I can finally leave my prison. I still have a few hours of daylight, but the shadows are already growing longer. I hate how every day they get longer as the Earth’s axis tilts back to equilibrium. They say in Hawaii, there is a phenomenon called Lahaina noon where the tilt of the Earth angles just right so that twice a year, objects cast no shadows at all. I can think of nothing more beautiful in nature. Not that I could ever afford to see it on my sandwich salary.

“I’m on it!” Shelly raised her hand. “Where’s my plunger?” It could be all a lie. Tegan had no way to tell. These people knew and loved Rick long before Tegan had ever walked through the doors and they could very well have some secret code to enable Rick to juggle all the women that she had on the go. Not all of them must know what Rick was like. For example, the woman Tegan had seen shouting at Rick on the first night. There were precedents. She could see that Rick could tell Tegan wasn’t convinced and Rick held up a finger, taking her phone from her pocket and dialling. “Hey, Jane?” The finger remained held upright as Rick nodded. “Yeah, you have just left. Just, I’m putting you on speaker, okay? What is our relationship to each other?”

“They said I did a good job.” He almost looked like he might have a tiny bead of a tear in his eyes. “I did a good job!” Anyone would think he’d won an award, but, then again, it probably felt as good, for him, as winning something so prestigious. He had fulfilled a lifetime ambition. Tegan felt a wave of emotion bubbling up inside because she had done this. She had made her dad so happy and that was perhaps the greatest thing she had ever done for him. Now she had tears in her eyes. Mum, of course, was practically sobbing. “Yeah, you did a good job.” That was Rick, the only one able to talk, and Tegan looked up to see her looking at Tegan, not Dad. “You both did a great job.” She wasn’t talking about the production, or Tegan’s part in it. She was talking about Tegan’s mum and dad and what job they had done. In that moment, though it seemed a little early, Tegan fell in love with Rick. Though, in truth, it was probably the second extraordinary kiss that had been the real catalyst. It really was that good.

Jayne was Jack today. Everything else was the same, only that ‘she’ was now ‘he’. At first glance, of course. It was never that easy. Never that simple. Amelia had to show great care and attention to everything going on around her and that had started to make people think her cold and detached, but they couldn’t possibly know that she was trying desperately to make sure she didn’t make any mistakes. Not because there would be consequences, that depended entirely on where she was, but because she found it far easier, simpler, just to let it all flow around her with little in the way of her affecting anything. Today, Jack was talking about his problems with Angelina. Yesterday, it was Jayne wondering if it was worth staying in the relationship that had been toxic for so long, that had been toxic for the couple of weeks they had experienced it. Amelia, of course, experienced it all in other, very different ways.
